New Moon ticket pre-sales breaking records
Nov 19, 2009 by Kate Ward No surprise here: Twilight fans are salivating in preparation to sink their teeth into the franchise’s much-anticipated sequel, New Moon. The film, which will be in theaters Friday, is already attracting record audiences for ticket sellers and venues across the country. According to Fandango, who notes that their numbers are increasing every second, several thousand New Moon showtimes have sold out, making it the most the company has ever sold prior to a film’s release date. (And, yes, that means the film has even topped The Dark Knight, and movies from both the Harry Potter and Star Wars franchises.) AMC and MovieTickets.com report the same information. Both the movie chain and the online ticket buying service have said the film has broken records set by Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. (New Moon even nabbed the No. 1 spot on MovieTickets.com’s list of top 10 advance ticket sellers of all time, breaking a nearly five-year-old record set by Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith. The service is also reporting over 2,150 sellouts for the film, with over 200 in Los Angeles and New York.) “You could say that Edward and Jacob slayed The Dark Knight and put a spell on Harry Potter to take the advance ticketing crown at Fandango,” says Fandango rep Harry Medved, who also says that 42 percent of 2,000 ticket buyers surveyed are younger than 24 years old. “Theater owners are continually adding new showtimes and posting them to keep up with fan demand.” So why have the numbers grown so much since the first film? Obviously, the tabloid fodder surrounding its three stars — Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner—surely hasn’t hurt matters. But the first film also drove 55 percent of Fandango’s surveyed ticket buyers to read the Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. Add to that the fact that most of the film’s audience is young and female — MovieTickets.com reports that 87 percent of their ticket buyers are female — and it’s no surprise that the sequel is beating its predecessor. Hoping to profit even further over the fervor, AMC is planning on offering New Moon collector’s cups, as well as T-shirts, tote bags, and posters at their cinemas. The fans, however, might not need any additional garb. According to Fandango, ten percent of fans plan on dressing up as characters from the film. And if you’re one of the lucky few who have scored Thursday night tickets — the majority of tickets sold on Fandango — be sure to cover your ears: The company says their stats show 51 percent of fans say they’re prepared to scream as soon as lights go down in the theater. Does that mean we’ll be deaf by the time we get to Eclipse? http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2009/...aking-records/ |

Vatican sinks teeth into vampire film Twilight
The Vatican has condemned "The Twilight Saga: New Moon", a Hollywood teen film about vampires and werewolves, as “dangerous” and morally empty. By Nick Squires in Rome 20 Nov 2009 New Moon is the long-awaited sequel to the highly successful Twilight film of last year, and opens in Britain today. It tells the story of a vampire who breaks the heart of a high school student, Bella (Kristen Stewart). She finds solace with her werewolf friend, before travelling to Italy to pursue the vampire (Robert Pattinson). The film, above, contained “an explosive mix” of good-looking protagonists dabbling in the supernatural, said Monsignor Franco Perazzolo of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Culture. The film’s occult imagery represented a “moral void more dangerous than any deviant message”, he said. At the Los Angeles premiere of New Moon this week, thousands of fans screamed and waved signs for their favourite actors. The films are based on a series of books by Stephenie Meyer, which have sold 85 million copies worldwide. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/f...-Twilight.html |

The Twilight Saga: New Moon shattered the midnight opening record, raking in an estimated $26.27 million at 3,514 sites showing the movie starting at 12:01 a.m. Friday.
The previous benchmark was Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which conjured $22.2 million at 3,003 sites for its midnight opening. That accounted for 38 percent of the picture's $58.2 million full opening day. The full opening day record is held by The Dark Knight, which earned $67.2 million on its first day. Its midnight-only opening was $18.5 million at 3,040 sites. The first Twilight drew around $7 million for its midnight opening and, by the close of its opening day, it had made $36 million on around 6,000 screens at 3,419 sites. The picture experienced a tremendous fan rush on that Friday, but Saturday and Sunday did not keep pace, leading to an opening weekend of $69.6 million. New Moon shows on approximately 8,600 screens at 4,024 sites this weekend. -IMDB News |

New Moon Breaks Dark Knight's Single Day Record
Source: BoxOffice, Rick November 21, 2009 After setting a new record for midnight openings with $26.27 million at 3,514 theaters, Summit Entertainment's The Twilight Saga: New Moon has also broken the record for a single day, earning $71 million on Friday at 4,024 theaters. The previous single day record of $67.1 million was held by The Dark Knight. It looks like The Dark Knight's 3-day record of $158 million may be in jeopardy now as well. http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=61085 |

Record DVD Sales For New Moon
March 24, 2010 Despite an overall drop in sales of DVDs and Blu-ray discs, numerous exceptions continue to defy the general statistics. The Twilight Saga: New Moon is the latest, with 4 million copies sold in its first weekend, Summit Entertainment said on Tuesday. The figure surpassed the 3.8 million sold during the first weekend of home video sales for Summit's original Twilight, which eventually racked up sales of 9.2 million making it the top-selling DVD of 2008. The figure does not include sales of digital downloads. In reporting on the results, the Los Angeles Times commented today (Wednesday): "Given the 13 percent decline in U.S. DVD revenue last year ... gaining any ground is something of a victory." -IMDB News |
