Wow this story really is sad this guy was a total con. Even lied straight to his mothers face. I always thought it was a con and actually funny as paul looks like an idiot in the story. After reading his ex wife’s comments I’m convinced it was an act. Too bad his life spiraled even further the after story is even more interesting.

![]() "Tyler" is one of my favorite UM segments, even though I think we've generally accepted the Amnesia segments are, for the most part, crap. As a child, I believed him completely. As time has passed, I've found his story less and less plausible. I do feel for his mother in this situation. She obviously cared for him very much. |

Sorry to hear about his current situation, but it doesn't sound like he was a very good person. I don't think his ex-wife sounded bitter, but even if she did, doesn't she have a right to be? Guys who don't pay their child support are scum. Either way, I never believed this guy had amnesia. He was just looking for a way out of his responsibilities.

I majored in psychology, and I'm a semi-pro actor, so the case fascinates me. Yeah, I believe that he faked it 100%. The reaction to the hospital staff alone was wholly unrealistic-- you might freak out for 5 seconds, but you will eventually realize that they're just hospital staff who are questioning you. I believe that he probably freaked out for minutes at a time, as the show portrays. Hilarious.
But as other people noted, the performance that he gave when he received the news from UM that his relatives had contacted them and when he called his mom is Academy Award worthy. I think that he believed that his life (avoiding incarceration and other responsibilities through gaining sympathy) depended on premium acting. Obviously it failed in an hilarious manner. Do I even need to state that he is now possibly faking brain damage as well? Anyway..... As his wife ex-wife stated in a different thread, when he is actually physically reunited with his mom the acting got very shaky, though. |

I guess I am in the minority on this one because I have never for a second believed he was faking amnesia. The evidence people point too is the fact he was looking to evade prosecution and getting divorced but that to me could have been the trigger that overwhelmed him. I don't doubt he is far from a Saint but and never came across as very intelligent to the point to be able to fool UM or other experts.
Craig Williamson and other amnesia cases on the other hand........... |

It's a familiar pattern, and it is not unique to this case.
1. Have problems, like everyone else (legal, marital, family, etc.) 2. Run away to another part of the country 3. Tell everyone you don't know who you are 4. Live off the charity of others (repeat #3 above as many times as necessary) until you've bled everyone dry 5. Repeat #3, but on television this time 6. Reunite with family and friends, but still say you don't remember 7. Live with the consequences of steps 1 & 2 above, but still say you can't remember. |

This case is nostalgic to me, because I too remember watching it as a kid. I don't remember my thoughts on him back then, but I do believe now he was 100% faking it.
Which got me thinking this morning, since dementia in older adults is a common thing, I wonder if some of these cold case suspects will eventually find themselves with dementia or Alzheimer "diagnoses", after justice catches up to them. Seems like a pretty good way to avoid questioning. |

Amazing because you don’t hear about amnesia stories anymore. I think UM was a platform sometimes for people who were so self absorbed to think ‘hey I can go on tv and plead my case and out of pity I’ll be exonerated’
