i could always stay with the same company and switch to another store but that runs the risk of seeing some of my current co-workers again. |

Some minimum wage bosses are just stupid and egotistical. I finally had to leave my job even though I enjoyed it and liked making the money just because of my boss. She was accusing me of all these things that I wasn't doing and she sounded very bizarre. She was telling me things like that I was trying to run her stupid husband over in the parking lot (WHAT?) and that I was treating the customers horribly.

Depending on what state you live in, it may be illegal for the manager to say anything about you other then whether or not he'd rehire you. |

Michael--do yourself a favor.......GET OUT!!!!!!
My g/f is in this situation at Kmart where she has worked for over 20 years and the current management team is constantly harassing her--if they can get her to quit, they can hire a minimum wage unskilled worker and not pay her unemployment, etc. She is always crying to me, but her options are very limited. She doesn't have a vehicle and any other job would not start her off at the pay she is making now, which she needs to pay rent, buy food, etc. We live in different states so being here with me is not an option (for either of us.......I'm full time at a grocery store, but only make min. wage) |

I totally agree with Janice. Looks like this manager just doesn't like guys with longer hair (meanwhile I do - I'm tired of this shaved look on young boys and men - enjoy your hair while you still have it)!!
I'm surprised he didn't use that as the excuse for not putting you on cash (oh the hair can fall in the groceries.....B.S.). Doesn't sound like you're going to get very far with this goof - especially if daddy's daughter is there. Start putting applications in at other grocery stores. Now is the time of year they need people anyway for the holidays. You'll have a good chance. To me, you should be working more at a clothes or accessories store anyway.

I didn't want to quit, but one employee said I didn't know what I was doing even though I did the job for 21 months while he was only there for 21 hours! I wish I could apologize to the kid, but looks like he'll never accept my apology. |

He does sound like an absolute jerk! That "cut your hair" comment was especially uncalled for. Your hairstyle has nothing to do with your job performance. If you work hard, show up on time, and are polite to customers, then that should be all that matters. I could care less how the cashier ringing my order looks as long as they're friendly and polite to me and understand English.
I'd find another job where you'll be respected, if I were you. |

Yeah, is your manager bald or something? He has hair envy!
But seriously, he has no right to make comments on your appearance. I've seen your pictures. In no way does your hair style impair you from performing your job duties. This is merely his personal opinion and its crossing a boundary. From the way you describe it... he's being a jerk. Manager's daughter? Pffft! Figures. You're really young so its natural for people to think you aren't capable of things. Its just a shame he doesn't even give you a chance as a cashier. Despite what he says, you know you are capable and can do it. Don't stop believing that. Just mute that lunatic's voice out, smile and everything will be butter. Years ago, I worked as a grocery stocker and cashier. I know all about being treated like dirt for minimum wage. But really, don't let it get you so upset to the point where you feel so down about yourself. It's very admirable that you've stuck with it for a while and not quit. Something better will come your way, get searching! |

I'm going to give my job one more chance, I'm not one to give up in situations and I want to stick it out as long as I can, and hope it gets better. But my manager is on very thin ice with me.
