yeah for awhile it was a pretty sizeable hit, along with "Roseanne" and "Home Improvement" it was one of ABC's biggest shows for awhile, but then Brett Butler had some issues and the series started to suffer, and the ratings eventually fell before it was ultimately and disgracefully cancelled.

isn't it weird how Cybill has higher ratings than both Murphy Browna nd The Nanny yet got cancelled before either one?

I was surprised to find out that with all the times NBC moved Newsradio, they never aired it on Thursdays. I think if they had put it there for maybe a couple of weeks, people would have watched it and it would have been a hit. They could have put it on at 9:30 pm right after Seinfeld. Would have done much better than the shows that aired in that timeslot during the time that Newsradio was on the air like Caroline in the City, Veronica's Closet and the Newsradio ripoff, Suddenly Susan.

now this is just a guess, but i think Newsradio was never going to be a hit for several reasons: #1) it wasn't really an accessiable show for most of "middle america" because it's humor was often dark and the tone often negative, and #2) Phil Hartman annoyed a lot of people...

plus i think it was more popular with males than females and at least imho at the time NBC was more concerned with female demographics for thursday nights.

just my opinion

I believe they aired a rerun of "Smoking" on a Thursday night. And then, I believe, though I might be wrong, they reran the "Bill Moves On" episode on a Thursday. But yeah, it should have been there instead of "Just Shoot Me." Paul Simms (the creator) even stated that he always wished NBC would put "NewsRadio" on Thursdays. Of course, it would have been well enough if it stayed on Tuesdays, but when they moved it to Sundays, it proved successful, so NBC decided to move it again to Wednesdays and that's when it sank. I don't know how much longer it would have lasted without Phil Hartman, but if the show was a hit, chances are there would have been more episodes in the seasons, so we could have had more episodes, total. Even if it did end with season five. We might have had exactly or a little OVER 100 episodes.

I always said NBC should have put Newsradio and 3rd Rock from the sun on Thursdays. They were real workhorse comedies for them. They were used to plug a hole in their schedule whenever. ..lol They sure would have been better than Single Guy and Veronica;'s Closet...two of the worst shows of all time.

"NewsRadio" doesn't seem like a mainstream sitcom. And that's exactly why I love it. It's not like the other bland sitcoms. However, I can see why the average viewer wouldn't watch it. I just find that sad. Because the show is really funny. It kind of reminds me of "Arrested Development." Both shows were critically acclaimed. Both networks kept the shows on longer than the ratings justified, meaning they tried, but the viewers just didn't come. And both shows are very funny.

And I understand it's your opinion, but who did Phil Hartman annoy?
