Maybe Sony will release Gloria too. I'd probably be the only one to buy a series on DVD that has Sally Struthers as the star.

It`s interesting that after all the time & expense I put into transferring all the 97 syndicated episodes (taped right off the air) onto DVD-R thinking ABP would never come out & suddenly Season 1 is planned to release.

I`m still buying any ABP shows on DVD because they will probably be "uncut" and the quality is probably better than taped off television. They probably use the master tapes for DVD.

But I will still hang onto my DVD-R`S until all of ABP Is officially released.

It's because it's regarded as a separate series, which is why the show doesn't air in syndication as its parent show All in the Family. But if one wants to be a stickler for chronological releases, then we shouldn't have gotten The Jeffersons on DVD yet since they didn't spin off from All in the Family until Season 5, which isn't out until January 2006.

I think it's good that they release the show now just in case sales for the later seasons of All in the Family don't hold up. If they start to wane at around Season 7 or 8, they'd probably release Season 9 and stop right there, which would mean no chance of seeing Archie Bunker's Place released.

It may seem odd to have it released 'out of order', but at least it strengthens the odds that we'll finally get all 13 seasons of this show. When it's complete, you can feel free to watch any season in any order you wish.

I respectfully disagree. The two shows are different in tone.

AITF is a show about a bigot railing against a changing world (politics, feminism, racial issues) because he doesn't understand what's going on and feels powerless in coping with it. On top of that he's challenged by his live-in liberal son-in-law and budding feminist daughter, who's trying to get his wife brushed up on women's lib.

ABP is a show about a curmudgeonly saloon owner who's a bit grumpy, but basically a softie inside. He's not the angry old Archie. Besides, there's no Edith (except for some token appearances in the first season), no Meathead and no Gloria. It aint AITF without them.

But, given that's it's still Archie, I can see why you would see ABP as a continuation of AITF. Heck, even TV Guide's write up of the first ABP episode remarked that this was the beginning of the show's 10th season - albeit with a name change.

Funnily enough, when the show's final season premiere was written up in 1982, TV Guide remarked that the show was beginning it's fourth season. Go figure....

It looks like the first episode is edited as it runs only 22:14, but all the other episodes have normal running times. Does anybody have a copy of the original one-hour premiere episode that they can time?

I can't wait! I'll be picking up this and "Knight Rider" tomorrow after work.

I look most forward to the uncut Thanksgiving episodes, and "A Small Mafia Favor" which never aired on TV Land.
