When they had an episode where (and this is a fuzzy memory) where either Larry or one of the Daryls was playing the piano on a set decorated like Liberace would have. Totally bizarre.

I never got tired of the Larry, Darryl and Darryl schtick...heck it was so cool it even popped up in the computer game- Baldur's Gate. (You run into 3 creatures named Larry, Darryl, and Darryl)

Having Michael hook-up with Stephanie so early on in the 3rd season robbed her of developing into a more interesting, individual character where she could show more talent. Instead, she, under the influence of Michael, devolved into this silly, superficial, unbelievable character. Remember how much better, more credible of a character Stephanie was during seasons one and two when she was on her own and occasionally had to fight off Kirk's advances.

I think if Newhart ever had a jump the shark moment it was season 7 when practically the entire creative crew behind the show left and completely new writers, producers, etc. came on. The new writers seemed not to be in touch with the show's sense of charm and humor and they sort of over-exaggerated and adjusted the characters in an unpleasant way (i.e. Michael literally losing his mind, etc.).
Michael in and of himself was a pretty good character, but I do think season 2 (before he came on) was a very solid season without him. Seasons 3-6 were probably the best though, with the final cast in place. For some reason I thought season 8 was an improvement over season 7. I just found it to be fun and satisfying despite retaining all the season 7 writers. A good season to end the show with. |
