What do you think would have happened if Mary was at work, not home early?

I like when Mary (his mom) witnesses the good-bye kiss but just plays it cool. Doesn't freak out or anything and gathers a bit more information before approaching him. Then I liked the way she got up and casually made herself available to talk and she let him approach her and bring it up when he was ready to.

I'd guess that nothing more would have happened that day, but the relationship would have continued and he would have still kept his "secret" to himself. I think if parents are open minded enough, they can often sense when something is going on. (The homophobes will deny it to the grave).

Are you talking about the part where she eavesdrops on his conversation with John?

Do you think it was right for her to eavesdrop on her son?

Um, he didn't approach her,she approached him. She coerced the confession out of him, because if you remember, he kept saying he wasn't gay and he started crying, and then she coerced the confession out of him when she said that she saw them kissing and knew that they were gay, so he had no choice but to confess that he was gay. He couldn't deny it anymore because she told him that she had seen them kissing.

Since the beginning of time, ALL mothers have eavesdropped or spyed on their kids - its unavoidable! I still remember my mom reading my diary when I was 14. I supposed they justify it as in their best interest.

Oh - o.k. - sorry - I must have misread it. Still, she was gentle, patient and understanding when he did come clean. I think she was trying to get him to own up to it more for HIM than for herself. I wish more parents could be like that with their gay children.

Default A goof in the story?

I think I made a goof in this story....

Mary asks Ralph is there is anything he wants to tell her or anything he wants to get off his chest. he says no, and I then wrote "Ralph was obviously lying." Technically, Ralph is not lying. He doesn't want to tell her his secret..... I probably should have wrote "Mary asked Ralph if there was anything he was hiding." Then, if Ralph said "No" that would be boldly lying.

Default Behind the scenes and deleted thoughts!

Commentary/deleted thoughts by author.

Commentary

This is my first gay story, though I had another story where people thought this guy was gay, but it turned out he wasn't and it was a rumor.

John and Ralph are openly gay at their school, because when I wrote the first paragragh, I envisioned them kissing at John's locker, which would be in the school hallway.

When I said that John and Ralph rode in the car in relaxed silence, i got the idea from a book called Love Is In The Air by Diana George. In one part of the book, one of my favorite parts, is where the two characters ride in comfortable silence to the heroine's house. It was put at such a great time in the book, that it just made me really happy to read that part. I changed the word comfortable to relaxed though.

The first kiss that Ralph and John share is a tiny peck. Ralph goes up to John and gives him a little kiss on the lips, a hello peck kiss. The second kiss that they share is a soft, open mouth kiss.(The one on Ralph's porch. This is not as little peck like at the school. This is a deep kiss..... When I said they kissed for a little while, they kissed for about two minutes......

When John says, "No!", he is not being sarcastic. He is genuinely shocked.

Ralph and John are 16 years old in this story. I have NO idea what race any of them are, as in some of my other stories, the characters don't have a specific race, except when it is absolutely necessary to write their race in the story.

While writing this story, I envisioned my own house as Ralph's house.... The living room in the story is my living room, the porch that Ralph and John were kissng on is my porch, everything about the hoise is my house, even the bedroom where Mary "sleeps" in is my parents' bedroom...... Even the phone that Ralph is on is the phone in the living room, and the phone that Mary uses is the phone in my parents' room.

This is one of my few/first stories ever completed, though I once had to do an assignment where I had to write 10 short stories, and they were REALLY short and rushed, like two or three pages long......

The reason that Ralph doesn't want to tell Mary that he's gay is because he's afraid she'll disown him for being gay.

Ralph really ISN'T thinking when he thinks that his mom is going to call the girl for John, because if he was, he would have realized that since John is gay, there'd be virtually no chance of him wanting to be hookjed up with the girl, so Ralph shouldn't have worried.

Ralph is one of my first characters to ever break down, though I had a story where this guy cried because he ended up in jail and his girlfriend was in the hospital. Ralph breaks down because he doesn't want his mom to know he's gay, but he does have a feeling that she knows because she said that she accepted him the way he was.... When she told him that someone told her that they'd seen him kissing John, he suffered and emotional breakdown because he was in denial.......

When John says, "You're my favorite boy", I just wrote that in kind of to be filler, sweet nothings that sweethearts say to each other, like "You are my baby".

Ralph is in no way saying that he regrets John or saying that he is ashamed of John. He is ashamed of himself for being gay... He loves John.

Ralph is shorter than John, so I envisioned Ralph standing on his tippytoes a little to kiss John.....

Deleted thoughts

I was going to write a whole different way that Mary found out Ralph was gay. I was going to have her look through his backpack and find a love letter between he and John or John and he and have her confront him with the note and have him breakdown and confess.

I was going to have Ralph scream the line, "He's mine" after Mary told him that she wanted to date John, but I decided that was a little awkward, so I decided to have Mary's friend's daughter be the potential "date" for John.....

I was going to write that Ralph said he didn't have anyone right now and then hang his head down, but I cut the hanging his head down part out.
