I'm in southern Indiana. There's no snow here at this time but the weather has been brutal cold since Christmas, much below normal for the time of year.

I'm feeling a little better this afternoon, I'm taking Advil cold and sinus tablets and it seems to be helping. A few more days of bed rest and I should be fine. I'll see everyone here later.

If you live in Indiana (home state of Barbara Cooper! ) and you said you used to live in Illinois, when and how did you become an Oakland A's fan?

At the end of The Runaways part 4 today, which usually ends in syndication with Julie and Barbara off to argue in the bedroom and Ann sitting down with a smile, there was a whole other scene afterwards!

Interesting question. I was a Cubs fan up through the 1976 season. Then during the '76 offseason, the Cubs traded my two favorite players, Rick Monday to the Dodgers and Bill Madlock to the Giants. I wasn't happy about this so I decided not to follow the Cubs anymore. Then when the '77 season started, I began getting interested in the A's. The 1977 A's had some interesting players like Mitchell Page and Tony Armas, who would become a pretty good slugger with the bat in the 1980's.

One of my favorite A's teams was the 1978 team. Again a roster filled with rookies and castoffs, but they got off to a 19-5 start and were the talk of baseball. They managed to stay within striking distance of first place through about the first week of August before collapsing down the stretch and losing about 40 of their last 50 games, finishing with only 69 wins. The A's had a tough schedule to end the season that year, playing against the top teams in the league for much of August and September.

Bobby Winkles started the 1978 season as the A's manager, but Charlie Finley kept calling him on the phone and telling him how to manage the team. After awhile Winkles had enough of this, and resigned as manager about 40 games into the season. Then Jack McKeon took over as manager. I often didn't like how McKeon managed the team. The A's that year had a center fielder who was a speedster on the bases, Miguel Dilone. He was the ideal lead off man but for whatever reason McKeon usually had Dilone bat 8th. Mike Edwards usually hit in the lead off spot, he was the A's 2nd baseman that year. I think Dilone should have batted lead off, with Edwards batting 2nd.

The A's main strength in 1978 was their pitching, starters and relievers overall had a good season.

Harry Carey, who announced the White Sox games in 1978, said something funny about Charlie Finley. It was late July and the A's were in Chicago for a two game series vs. the White Sox. The A's were playing very well at the time and were in the process of sweeping the two game series, and Harry Carey said this about Charlie Finley towards the end of the 2nd game. "I don't know how Charlie does it. He has no scouts, no sales force, no one goes to the games to watch the team play, but he still puts together a good ball club!"
