Post Compulsions

Compulsions
Scene: Outside- Jo is working on the bike. She goes inside and to the bathroom. She starts washing her hands and we see the dirt wash off. Then we see her hands through her eyes- they are still dirty. She scrubs and scrubs and scrubs. Finally she is satisfied that they are clean. She walks out of the bathroom. We hear the phone ring.
Blair: Jo. Phone call!
Jo walks into the living room. She takes the phone from Blair but takes it awkwardly to avoid touching Blair’s hand.
Blair: What’s your problem? I don’t have cooties!
Jo: Nothing- I don’t have a problem. (Into the phone)Hello?
Blair walks off and the camera follows her. She looks very confused and at the same time a little insulted. She shrugs it off and goes upstairs.
We see Jo hang up the phone then go back into the bathroom. She leaves the door open as she washes her hands. Blair sticks her head in.
Blair: What are you doing?
Jo: Its called washing my hands. I’m going to go help out in the kitchen. Most people wash their hands before dealing with food.
Blair: Alright- I just thought that you had already washed your hands. You don’t have to take up an attitude.
Jo goes into the kitchen. A little while later all four girls and Mrs G are working in the kitchen when the phone rings.
Mrs G: Jo can you go answer the phone?
Jo: Sure Mrs G.
Jo goes to the door and puts up her hand to push it open. She looks at her hand then turns around and walks through the door backwards and opens the door with her back.
Mrs G: That was strange. She acted like she almost didn’t want to touch the door.
Blair: She’s been acting weird all day. (smiles) But maybe its normal for Jo.
Mrs G: Blair. I’m serious I’m started to worry.
Blair: Well I’ll go see what’s wrong.
Blair walks out the door and sees Jo holding the phone with her apron. Jo finishes her conversation and hangs up the phone.
Blair: Why are you holding the phone with your apron?
Jo: Umm cause there was stuff on my hands.
Blair: Alright then wipe off your hands and pick up the phone.
Jo wipes her hands off on her apron then goes to pick the phone up.
Jo: I don’t have to prove anything to you. Get off my case!
Jo runs upstairs. Blair goes back into the kitchen.
Blair: Something is definitely wrong. I don’t understand. She was using her apron to hold the phone and when I asked her about it she really flipped out and went upstairs. I’m going upstairs.
Blair goes upstairs, shortly followed by everyone else. They walk into the bedroom and see Jo in the bathroom washing her hands. They are all red and practically rubbed raw.
Blair: Jo what’s going on? Something is obviously very wrong. You’ve never been this concerned when it comes to keeping your hands clean. Your always working on your bike and getting filthy. Come to think of it, I haven’t seen you go near your bike in a few days.
Jo stops, dries her hands off and comes into the bedroom.
Jo: What I do in my spare time is none of your business. I don’t have any problem and I don’t need to take this.
Mrs G: That may be true but you aren’t acting the same. And if something is wrong it is our business as your friends.
Nat: Yes Jo. All of this washing your hands and not touching things. I even saw you wearing a pair of latex gloves earlier.
Tootie: Jo all we want to do is help. Please tell us what’s wrong.
Jo: Nothings wrong. I don’t need to take this.
Mrs G: Ok. (closes the door) If nothing is wrong you may leave. You can go. Just open that door and we’ll stop bothering you.
Jo: Fine!
Jo goes over to the door. She goes to grab the handle but just before she touches it she lets her hand fall by her side.
Jo: Alright I’m going downstairs now.
Again she goes to open the door but doesn’t touch the handle. She turns again.
Jo: I’m leaving now.
She does the same thing again.
Jo: I can’t. For the past few days I have been overly concerned with dirt. I keep feeling that there is dirt on my hands and want them clean. There it is.
She points to an area on her hand that is perfectly clean.
Nat: Umm Jo? There is nothing there. Your hand is clean.
Jo: Mrs G, what’s wrong with me?
Mrs G: I don’t know Jo. But we’ll get you some help.
Nat: I think I know what’s wrong. She has obsessive compulsive disorder.
Tootie: What’s that?
Nat: It’s a disorder in which you have obsessions that lead to compulsions. She’s obsessed with keeping her hands clean. Since she’s obsessed with keeping her hands clean she does compulsive actions like constantly washing her hands and refusing to touch things.
Jo: Thankyou Dr Green. But what do I do now?
Nat: It can be treated- but we’ve gotta go to a doctor- at least one that has their medical degree and can prescribe medication. (Nat smiles)
Jo (smiles): Right.
Mrs G: Alright lets go.
Mrs G and Jo go to the doctor. Two hours later they return home.
Blair: What did they say Jo?
Jo: Well I’m going to go talk with a Dr Hooper once a week about when I think I’ve gotta wash my hands over and over. I also have some medicine. But I feel better already. Just knowing that there is something I can do to not think my hands are filthy. And knowing you guys care so much.
Everyone gives Jo a hug.
-One month later-
Blair comes in.
Blair: Where’s Jo?
Mrs G: I think she’s out back working on her bike.
Blair smiles. She goes out to where Jo and her bike are.
Blair: Hey Jo. Look I got an A on that test that I was studying forever for.
Jo: That’s great. Here.
Jo stands up and is about to take Blair’s test to look at it.
Blair: Ew your hands are filthy! Jo that’s wonderful- YOUR HANDS ARE FILTHY! I’ve never been happier.
Jo looks at her hands. Sure enough there is grease all over them. She looks up at Blair and goes to wipe them off on Blair. Blair jumps out of the way.
Blair: Ok just cause I’m glad your filthy doesn’t mean I want to be filthy.
Jo wipes her hands off on a rag then the girls go in the house each with an arm around the other’s shoulder.
THE END

That was an interesting story. I like the fact that you choose to write a story about an issue something that isn't shown much on TV.
