September 5: Happy Birthday Rose McGowan

Rose McGowan is turning 48 today. She is in the center of the above photo, between Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs.

McGowan was born in Italy, to American parents. During her childhood, she was a model for a while and also a runaway, before becoming an emancipated minor at the age of 15. She began working in film and television a couple of years later, making her first credited appearance on True Colors. McGowan had a small role in Encino Man, before starring in Gregg Araki’s The Doom Generation.

Over the next several years, McGowan appeared in a number of indie movies, such as Kiss & Tell, Going All the Way, and Lewis and Clark and George. She also costarred in Scream as Tatum Riley, where she had a fatal encounter with a garage door, and starred in the cult classic teen film Jawbreaker.



In 2001, McGowan joined the cast of Charmed as Paige Matthews, replacing Shannen Doherty, whose character had died in the previous season finale. She remained with the series through the final season five years later. Her subsequent TV work has included costarring as Ann-Margret on the CBS miniseries Elvis, and a recurring role on the final season of Nip/Tuck.

During the 2000s, McGowan appeared in feature films such as Ready to Rumble and Monkeybone. She starred in the Planet Terror segment of Grindhouse, and had a small role in The Black Dahlia. More recently she starred in the indie Canadian thriller The Sound.

In 2018, McGowan was the subject of the E! Network documentary series Citizen Rose. It focused on her past experiences in the industry with the likes of Harvey Weinstein, and her involvement in the Me Too movement.
