GRADY came about after Redd Foxx walked out on SANFORD AND SON for a couple of months. To compensate, the producers had Grady move in with Lamont until Fred returned. The producers and network were impressed with Whitman Mayo. The ratings for the series held up and fan response was positive -- Mayo received a lot more fan mail during this period. So it convinced the network to give Mayo his own shot at a series and GRADY was born. Unfortunately, the format of GRADY wasn't very interesting, and he returned to SANFORD the following year.
