One of my favorite books. I read it in high school and last year in a history class. It's set during the Great Depression and begins in Oklahoma. The story follows the Joad family, known as "Okies", out to California (the Promised Land) in search of farm work. When the Joads finally make it to California they find there's not enough jobs and live in awful conditions trying to find work. Everytime they get a little bit of happiness, it's destroyed. The movie won a lot of academy awards, but it leaves off the last 200 pages because they were too taboo for 1939. So, do not try watching the movie if you can't make it through the book. It's over 600 pages long and is well worth it, but don't leave the last 300 pages up to the last weekend because you won't do anything else that weekend (Bad, really bad, mistake)!
