I believe a lot of that was just dealing with the times Late 70s/Early 80s. I mean, having that be the premise of the show, "Diff'rent Strokes" proves they were going to get some reactions of surprise. Although its more common to see white adopting black children today, some folks would still react awkwardly to it.
