I haven's seen a lot of The Storybook Squares or Hip Hop Squares but to me in 1969, NBC was trying to capitalize on the success of Hollywood Squares in daytime so Heatter/Quigley, who produced a kids version of Video Village and Shenanigans came up with The Storybook Squares. Though it wasn't successful on Saturday morning, it returned on the daytime version about once a year.

As for Hip Hop Squares, I only saw a few minutes online and it's a valiant attempt to modernize a classic format. The original, as well as other incarnations were comedy driven and to me it seemed that it was more music driven.
