Actually, it really hearkens back to a very old English comedy tradition, rooted in the London theater. A very dialogue-driven style. As Americans in general have a very, very short span of attention, it wouldn't work on them. But then, the same people can't deal with Woody Allen, either.
The more I watch the show, the more I love it, with each viewing, it seems more and more is revealed. The series was a genuine masterpiece...and stands quite unique among all British sitcoms, in style, and wit.
