It became a big hit when I Love Lucy was on and it was still in the top ten when All in the Family and Sanford were hits- personally I have never watched an episode of it and don't think I'm missing anything. Bonanza has been a big rerun favorite in my area, although that doesn't interest me either.

Keep in mind that when Gunsmoke/Bonanza was in primetime, there were only 3 Channels for Viewers to choose from, not 256 like it is today.
