Hi Trace! I have some good news for you...you've got nothing to worry about! While I can't really explain what causes this, I can tell you that it has no lasting effects what so ever. I am also one who take VERY good care of my DVDs and CDs and I have seen exactly what you discribe on both DVDs and audio CDs in my collection. Many of the CDs and DVDs that have this kind of blotchy pattern on them were there since purchase, and some of I seemed to notice after I had them for a while. Still, I have DVDs that have been this way for years and years now and they still work as well as the day I got them. Just keep the bottom dust and scratch free and your DVDs and CDs should last a lifetime..and then some!
