Actually Mark was a dentist, they usually have their own practice and aren't subject to layoffs.......in my fan fiction world...Barbara would have divorced Mark in the late 80's......If you watch the episodes there was never much real chemistry between them in fact in one of the last real episodes Barbara and Max develope an attraction to one another....Barbara desperately wanted a baby and in another real episode she gets too attached to baby Annie. She and Max would have gotten even closer over the years with Julie's absense. To prove my point further during the recent reunion there was no mention of the actor or character of Mark Royer, yet the actor portrayed Max was even interviewed!
