Sex In The City is known for what? SEX. No broadcast station could have aired the series; TBS has to edit the episodes down to be able to rebroadcast them. And
The Sopranos is all about the whacking and the swearing. Not a chance that could air on CBS.
And as for quality writing and storytelling, HBO doesn't have to worry as much about advertising, ratings, commercials, etc, etc, as the broadcast networks do. Reality TV is replacing scripted shows because it gets ratings -- it doesn't have to be quality. HBO is able to pump out quality programming because people are paying extra to see their shows. Nobody is paying anything extra to see FOX or NBC. Hence, crappy reality shows that millions will watch.
