Chances are if you remember the songs I Gotta Be Me Something's Gotta Give and What Kind Of Fool Am I? you might've listened to the amazing talent of Sammy Davis Jr. While many people associate Sammy Davis Jr. with The Rat Pack which he was part of with Frank Sinatra Dean Martin and Joey Bishop. Sammy Davis Jr. became the spokesman for Alka-Seltzer in the 1970's in which he performed his own jingle of Alka-Seltzer as well as a Vegas style version of the classic Plop Plop Fizz Fizz Oh, What A Relief It Is jingle. The commercial I unearthed was from 1976 and features Sammy Davis Jr. talking about how Alka-Seltzer works and then the commercial ends with the famous jingle. I don't know why Sammy Davis Jr. got chosen to promote Alka-Seltzer but it was an odd choice for popular singers to promote medicines while celebrities promoted food during that time. Sammy Davis Jr. died in 1990 but these commercials are considered worthy watches

Alan Ritchson’s big break in Hollywood opened a door that quickly slammed shut, yet there was a heroic ending.

In 2005, the "Reacher" star made his acting debut as Arthur Curry aka Aquaman on "Smallville", the WB’s Superman series about Clark Kent’s formative teen years.

Ritchson’s single episode set a ratings record, prompting network execs to offer the unknown actor his own superhero spinoff — an opportunity that washed away with the subsequent WB-UPN merger.

“What happened behind the scenes for me was the best loss that I could have ever asked for,” he revealed to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “It was a blessing in disguise.”

When Ritchson first stepped foot on the set of "Smallville", a year after he competed on "American Idol", “I didn’t know what I was doing at all,” he admitted.

To help him, the network hired an acting coach who “would fight all the time” with the show’s director. “I was wholly confused the entire time... I didn’t know what I was doing, coasting on instincts.”

That natural intuition kept his head level amid Aquaman negotiations when WB execs assured Ritchson “you’re going to be the next big thing.”

Once the networks merged into The CW, “The president of UPN took over and he looks at the slate of shows they’re developing and he’s like, ‘who the hell is this guy with no resume getting his own show,’” Ritchson recalled to Horowitz. “Long, long story short they ended up coming back actually at one point because they couldn’t find anybody else.”

Ritchson was cut from Aquaman a second time when soap star Justin Hartley was cast as the young superhero with marine telepathy. A pilot episode was shot, but ultimately never aired.

The rollercoaster taught Ritchson a valuable lesson about “losing what felt like a sure thing.”

“Until you’re in front of the camera… until it’s done and in the can and in front of audiences, nothing is a sure thing in this business,” he told Horowitz. “I learned to hold so loosely to every opportunity that came to where I would never get too excited, you know… It just [helped] me navigate this business in a more grounded way. And I learned that right out of the gate with a real tough loss.”

Michael Hayes- One Year Too Early To Be Successful

Between when David Caruso left NYPD Blue and starring in CSI: Miami which would be a smash hit most of its run, he starred in a drama on CBS that was one and done. Michael Hayes, about a brooding federal prosecutor, aired Tuesdays at 9:00 the fall of 1997, following JAG's first season on the CBS starting lineup leading off Tuesdays. Michael Hayes did get the back 9 for a full 22 episode season (something broadcast networks are mostly too cheap to give anymore :rolleyes:). That is better than Michael Hayes leadout Dellaventura got, which was capped at 13 episodes. But Michael Hayes had way too stiff of competition in 1997 with Home Improvement's last year anchoring the night at 9:00, and Frasier's last Tuesday season for awhile, being moved to Thursdays as Seinfeld's replacement. Home Improvement and Frasier were in a dead heat for the last overall top 10 spot in the 1997-1998 season. Just Shoot Me had great retention from Frasier at #12, but fell apart completely out of the top 30 when replacing Frasier as the Tuesday anchor fall 1998. Spin City ironically did better replacing Home Improvement, which moved to leadoff for its final season. Spin City made the top 30 fall 1998-1999 which it hadn't 1997-1998, but only at a tie for #25. CBS went back to having Tuesday movies fall 1998. But with Just Shoot Me's collapse and a lot weaker competition from NBC and ABC, Michael Hayes would have had a lot better chance of long term success if it premiered one year later, in fall 1998 instead of fall 1997.

In my primetime directory, I happened to come across the listing for a strange Michael Nesmith variety show Michael Nesmith in Television Parts that NBC brought to primetime in 1985. The final three episodes were burned off in Saturday Night Live's late night timeslot on July 27, 1985. :lol: What other shows, if any, have been burned off in SNL's late night slot, or given a run there when SNL would have been in repeats? This is not counting sports delays with their inevitable overruns, preemptions when the Olympics were going on, or breaking news coverage of something major like 9/11.

Seinfeld's Banned Puerto Rican Day Episode

A week before the series finale of Seinfeld originally aired on NBC, "The Puerto Rican Day" episode aired. It featured Kramer accidentally lighting a Puerto Rican flag on fire then stomping on it. 10 days ago TVLine had an article about this, after backlash NBC banned it from appearing in syndication for at least four years. I don't recall ever seeing this episode locally or otherwise, are there markets that still ban it? And do Comedy Central and TVLand, Seinfeld's current cable channels, air Puerto Rican Day? After the TVLine article I sent Preston Beckman an email asking about this, but he never responded.
