Out of all eleven seasons, Modern Family’s ninth is its dullest and most forgettable. Oh, the series’ overall quality will continue to erode after this. Its struggle to narratively sustain itself will lead to both more recycling and more contorting of the main characters in order to justify increasingly broader, less-specific (and certainly less premise-backed) notions. And in that regard, the worst is yet to come. However, both Ten and Eleven were crafted to be the series’ swan song, meaning they observe more conscious efforts to instill in individual episodic samples more character, and sometimes even premise-affiliated, stakes. Not always successfully, but enough to make those collections stand out with a higher variance in quality — more lows, yes, but a few highs too. With Nine, though, it’s pretty much all flat — consistent in its mediocrity. Well below average by the standards of this series, and the genre’s as a whole. In fact, this is a full season that, really, you could just skip. There’s nothing here that’s worthwhile in our examination of Modern Family or 2010s sitcoms… But let me not be too harsh.

Modern Family remains incredibly consistent. Only now, it’s consistently below-average. Season Eight, like Seven, is not only too often far removed from the unique particulars of the premise, its stories are also not memorably, personally, or creatively well-tailored to the individual elements that kept the series afloat for so long — these characters. And it’s no mystery why. While the adults have stagnated and are therefore no longer capable of generating many new ideas, the kids have been diluted and are also now less helpful than ever before. They’ve shed so much of their distinction, existing now within material that could be found on many teen-filled family sitcoms. That’s most evident this year with Haley, who’s no longer attached to Andy but is still being thrown bland rom-com blather that doesn’t display her previously well-contrasted persona, and with the boys, who are now just generic girl-seeking high schoolers. This year also adds Baby Joe to the mix — an occasional plot device who has no actual personality and actively tamps down earned comedic opportunities.

After many years of minimizing the most unique aspects of the series’ situation until they were narratively climaxed at the end of Season Five, Modern Family enjoyed one more collection that surprisingly kept a solid baseline, avoiding any truly bad offerings while even delivering a few great ones. This was largely due to strong bones — seasoned writers and well-defined, easy-to-use characters who may never have been the best at inspiring totally fresh ideas but nevertheless continued to prove adept at reliable laughs, thereby maintaining consistency. And, of course, there was also some heavy-handed gimmickry that managed to generate episodic delights. Sadly, the show finally pays the piper for its evaporating premise and ever-diminishing ingenuity here in Seven. For the first time, Modern Family is no longer basically good — in fact, most episodes are mediocre or worse, trafficking in stories that aren’t just overly familiar to this family subgenre but fully recycled from previous years. That is, Modern Family slips below “average” — not merely in the genre, but on the show’s terms, as it’s regularly disappointing based on its own standards. The problem? Generally, most episodes are either redundant or not specific enough to the series — rendering them un-exciting. More to the point, the regulars are no longer able to overcompensate for clichés.

Comedian Rob Corddry spent four years as a correspondent on The Daily Show, won four Emmy Awards for his cult hit series Children’s Hospital, and has more than 120 acting credits to his name—including a celebrated dramatic performance in the new AMC series The Audacity. But as he told me on a new episode of Obsessed: The Podcast, there is one big career decision that still hurts. “There is one that I said no to that turned out to be a massive show,” Corddry said.

With Jay and Gloria walking Mitch down the aisle in Season Five’s finale, the most individualized dynamics within Modern Family’s situation were climaxed, signaled by this definitive display of mutual acceptance. So, even though no year after the first has actually excelled at generating regular conflicts from these “non-traditional” constructs, the end of Five was implying a formal shift. Indeed, what follows is more non-series-specific sitcommery, and even more generic ideas. However, Six is still a fine year, largely due to seasoned scribes and well-defined characters. They’re still able to guarantee consistency with regard to laughs and story. What’s more, there’s a real effort this year — more than usual — to come up with fresh narrative notions. The most notable is an entry that boldly uses the “screenlife” gimmick. We’ll get into it below, but it’s notable because it also reveals a half-attempt to pivot the “Modern” in Modern Family away from those unique relationships and onto the broader notion of technology and its foundational presence in these characters’ lives. I personally don’t buy it as a crucial aspect of the series’ identity — not only because I don’t think it’s been a constant or key through-line, but also because it’s not something that defines the characters, like those family constructs do.

When "Modern Family’s" eldest daughter Haley Dunphy ditched who viewers felt was her soulmate (Andy, played by Adam Devine) and instead went with the handsome but goofy Dylan (Reid Ewing), the disappointment was real. The knife was twisted further by where she ended up in the show’s final episode.

By the end of the long-running sitcom, Haley’s screen time had been shortened, and her arc became centered around being a wife and mom.

On X in January 2020, a fan asked why Haley had been missing from so many episodes that season.

Hyland’s reply? “Apparently I’ve been busy with the twins,” she wrote, punctuating her post with an emoji of a woman holding her hands up in confusion.

Speaking with with Cosmopolitan a few months later, Hyland articulated her disappointment with her character's ending. She wished that Haley had been able to “own her badassery in the fashion world — becoming a badass stylist or brand mogul or anything like that.”

She continued, “No offense to moms, of course: There are so many amazing mothers who are also hard workers and excel at their jobs and kill it every day in both aspects. That would have been a really cool thing to see, especially from someone like Haley.”
Season Five is a good year for Modern Family because it’s a natural crescendo that also offers pause for reflection and pride. The year opens with Cam and Mitch’s engagement and closes with a triumphant wedding that solidifies what Modern Family has been practicing all along — the normalization of otherwise “non-traditional” family dynamics. Those dynamics once made the show “modern” and fresh, but they’ve been minimized over time to be less often a source of conflict in story, leading to less situation comedy related to the series’ specific premise and its most special elements. Indeed, after the wedding, it’ll become even rarer to see tension about Mitch’s familial construct, with Five signaling a demarcation that will essentially precede a drop in the series’ regular quality. In fact, the show — which reaches its 100th episode milestone here in Season Five — has sustained itself rather well up to this point. Even though its narrative ingenuity has declined incrementally every year since the first, Five’s baseline quality remains in the green. This is a testament to some core strengths — smart writers who designed easy, comedically clear characters in a wide-open low concept.

Now would be a good time to reiterate that when I refer to Modern Family as a solid, consistent show, that’s because you can trust that it will seldom be bad. At least, not during the first half of its run. This is a testament to its baseline compared to others in the genre. However, I don’t mean that it’s solid or consistent in terms of every season being equal. No, every season after the novelty-laden first has shed some series-specific originality, and this year sees another drop. What’s that mean? Well, despite well-defined characters, the stories are just getting more familiar and less exciting as the years progress, capitalizing less and less on the most unique aspects of the situation — those non-traditional family set-ups within the premise. In their place are ideas more common within the family subgenre. Notions that, frankly, other sitcoms could do. For instance, Season Four boasts an arc where Gloria is pregnant. Oh, it’s not a terrible thought, as it’s another wrinkle to the status quo that emphasizes Jay and Gloria’s “non-traditional” dynamic (second marriage, age gap, culture clash), and it’s therefore one of the things that could highlight Modern Family’s individuality in weekly sitcommery. Unfortunately, this season isn’t thinking that way; it’s ultimately just adding a baby, delivering much of the same stuff we’ve seen before on other family shows. That’s because everything about this family is becoming more “normal”; so, even with clear and funny characters, the storytelling is becoming more normal too — less personal, less special…
