Don Draper from Mad Men is one of the most iconic characters in television history — but what if everything you think you know about him is the performance he wants you to see?

In this episode, we break down Don's psychology through the Big Five personality model and attachment theory to reveal why the man who sells human connection for a living is constitutionally incapable of experiencing it.

From a childhood defined by abandonment and shame to a stolen identity that became a psychological prison, we trace the devastating logic behind every affair, every disappearance, and every perfectly crafted pitch that says more about his wounds than any confession ever could.

This is a deep-dive character analysis with full spoilers for Mad Men Seasons 1–7.

Salvatore Romano is one of Mad Men’s most beloved and heartbreaking characters. In this video essay, we explore the tragedy of Sal Romano, his contribution to advertising in 1960s America, and why his departure from Mad Men feels so devastating years later.

We discuss his marriage to Kitty Romano, his friendship with Ken Cosgrove, and his encounter with Lee Garner Jr. Sal’s story is about far more than the fear of being exposed. It’s about performance, identity, shame, and the impossible choices faced by many gay men in the mid-20th century.

Through a close analysis of Salvatore Romano’s character arc, this essay examines how Mad Men portrays secrecy, masculinity, homophobia, and self-expression—and why Sal’s ending remains one of the show’s most haunting unresolved stories.

Sal is one of my favorite characters in Mad Men. I very much hope I did him justice in this video.

01:11: Performance is Protection

06:16: Performance is Unsustainable

18:00: Performance is Isolation

28:39: What Sal’s Absence Means

Today, we are doing a character deep dive into an amazing supporting character, Trudy Campbell! She is one of the most overlooked characters in the TV series Mad Men, but one of the most revealing. This video explores her character development, her marriage to Peter Campbell, and what her story says about power, gender, status, and sacrifice.
Trudy is one of my favorite characters on the show so I was excited to talk about her!
