Backrooms Stuns with $81 Million Debut, Obsession has Another Unprecedented Jump, The Mandalorian and Grogu Suffers 70% Drop
by Rebecca Rubin
May 31, 2026

This weekend was one for the box office history books. Movie theaters across the nation were jamming with Gen Z crowds, who showed up en masse for not one but two buzzy horror films.

A24’s Backrooms collected a jaw-dropping, record-breaking $81 million from 3,442 North American theaters in its opening weekend. That’s as ticket sales for the Focus Features breakout Obsession jumped again in its third frame with $26.4 million from 2,781 cinemas — and crossed the $100 million mark domestically.

Both movies were directed by YouTube stars and cost nearly nothing to produce, upending conventional wisdom about the necessary components for a hit.

Disney’s The Mandalorian and Grogu suffered a catastrophic 70% drop in its second weekend, signaling the property isn’t catering beyond an aging group of core fans.

Despite playing on far more screens, The Mandalorian and Grogu landed in third place on weekend charts behind Backrooms and Obsession.

Sony’s PG family comedy The Breadwinner and Focus Features’ war drama Pressure — fell short of expectations.

The Breadwinner rounded out the top five on North American charts with $7.5 million from 2,352 theaters. Comedian Nate Bargatze plays a husband who agrees to become a stay-at-home dad when his wife lands a deal on Shark Tank.

Pressure landed behind Lionsgate’s musical biopic Michael, which is in its sixth weekend of release. The film brought in $11.7 million over the weekend.

So far, the Michael Jackson biopic has earned $339.9 million in North America and a mighty $851.3 million globally.

WWII drama Pressure, starring Brendan Fraser as Dwight D. Eisenhower during the tense 72 hours leading up to D-Day, debuted at No. 7 with a soft $5.4 million from 1,829 venues.

May 29-31, 2026: Weekend Studio Estimates

1. Backrooms $81,456,295
2. Obsession $26,400,000 / $104,757,650
3. Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu $25,000,000 / $137,368,604
4. Michael $11,700,000 / $339,903,243

This movie is from 1999 and I was wondering how many people here have seen it. I think anybody who lives in a small town or has lived in one should see this movie. It is one of the most accurate portrayals of life in a small town ever made...

It was filmed in a remote area of West Texas in the town of Alpine. This is one of the most sparsely populated regions in the US,only portions of the Great Basin in NV and UT might be so remote. In reality Alpine has several thousand residents and there are only two other towns within about 50 miles. To reach a medium sized city like El Paso or Midland-Odessa is a drive of many hours. The whole point of the film was trying to describe what real life is like in a very remote small town - a place so remote there is nothing nearby to compare anything with. It was a bit different from the typical teenager living in small town USA film.

I suppose it can feel not pleasant living in such small areas with not many people!

May 16, 1986, 40 years ago: Top Gun premieres, directed by Tony Scott -- at this point, better known as the younger brother of director Ridley Scott. It was produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, and would prove to be typical of Bruckheimer fare.

This was not a film to watch while you were actually on a plane. Unfortunately, I did, on a flight from Orlando to Newark the following November, which was nearly as rough as the flight scenes.

The name "Top Gun" refers to the U.S. Navy's Fighter Weapons School, at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego.

This was a typical 1980s movie. It is full of swagger and smiles and patriotism, like the man then President of the United States. And, just like said President, it is all phony as hell. Including the fact that, had these events actually happened, it would have meant World War III.

Yes, Top Gun, like so much about the 1980s, is phony. Right down to the main couple: Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis. At least Kelly now admits that she's gay in real life.

The critics were mixed -- sometimes with themselves. Gene Siskel, like his At the Movies TV partner Roger Ebert, liked the action scenes, but he didn't like the romantic subplot, writing that "It belongs in a teenage sex-fantasy film, and not in a movie that deserves the genuine romantic value of An Officer and a Gentleman." And Pauline Kael said the film suggested that it was "as if narcissism is what being a warrior is all about."

Nevertheless, Top Gun was the highest-grossing film of 1986. It helped inspire the spoof films Hot Shots! in 1991 and Team America: World Police in 2004, but also the series TV series Pensacola: Wings of Gold and JAG -- and, indirectly, the NCIS franchise that started as a spinoff of JAG.

Nostalgia can be a powerful thing. The sequel, Top Gun: Maverick -- named for the call sign of Cruise's character, Pete Mitchell -- became the highest-grossing film of 2022. Apparently, it's okay for Cruise to still play Maverick at the age of 60, but it wasn't okay for Roger Moore to still play James Bond in his 50s.

The sequel even worked Val Kilmer's fatal illness into the plot, as, with the aid of a voice replicator, Kilmer was able to play one final role, returning as former "Iceman" Tom Kazansky, and give Maverick his dying approval.

In the 2023 film The Flash, the titular superhero's messing with the timeline resulted in a rearrangement of some classic 1980s films: Eric Stoltz was not replaced as Marty McFly by Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future, Fox played Ren McCormack in Footloose instead of Kevin Bacon, Bacon played Maverick instead of Cruise in Top Gun, and Cruise was not mentioned, although Top Gun was hardly his first big movie, so he likely still had a big career.

Michael Returns to No. 1 in Fourth Weekend, Obsession Starts Strong With $16 Million
by Rebecca Rubin
May 17, 2026

Michael has moonwalked back to No. 1 at the domestic box office, earning a strong $26 million in its fourth weekend of release.

In a sign of its remarkable staying power, Michael towered over several more recent releases, such as The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Mortal Kombat II as well as newcomers like the Focus Features horror film Obsession, Amazon MGM’s revenge thriller Is God Is and Black Bear’s action adventure In the Grey.

So far, the Michael Jackson biopic has generated $283 million in North America and a staggering $703.8 million globally.

It already ranks as the highest-grossing musical biopic in North America, outpacing 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody ($216 million). The Queen biopic is larger at the worldwide box office with $911 million, though Michael should eventually supplant that record, too.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 slid to second place on domestic charts after two consecutive weekends at No. 1. The nostalgic sequel earned $18 million from 3,830 venues in its third outing, a decline of 58% from the prior weekend.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 has been a hit with $546.2 million in global ticket sales, including $175.9 million in North America and a massive $370 million internationally.

Obsession enjoyed the strongest start among new releases, landing in third place with $16 million from 2,615 theaters. Audiences and critics were enthusiastic, awarding the film an “A-” grade on CinemaScore exit polls and a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes — which bodes well for box office longevity.

YouTube breakout and first-time director Curry Barker directed Obsession, which follows a hopeless romantic who makes a twisted Faustian bargain to win his crush’s heart. Focus spent $14 million to acquire the R-rated thriller at last year’s Toronto Film Festival.

Mortal Kombat II tumbled to fourth place with $13.4 million from 3,534 theaters in its sophomore outing. Those ticket sales mark a sharp 65% drop from opening weekend.

The Warner Bros. video game sequel has generated $62.2 million in North America and $101 million globally after two weekends of release. It cost $80 million to produce.

Sheep Detective rounded out the top five with $9.3 million from 3,554 screens in its second weekend, a decline of just 38% from its debut.

The crowd-pleasing mystery, starring Hugh Jackman alongside some talking sheep, has grossed $29.6 million in North America and $58.7 million worldwide. Amazon MGM spent a hefty $75 million to produce the film.

In the Grey, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Henry Cavill and Eiza González, opened at No. 9 with a muted $3 million from 2,018 locations.

Guy Ritchie directed the movie, which has lousy reviews (46% on Rotten Tomatoes) and a tepid audience reaction (“B” grade on CinemaScore).

Not far behind, Is God Is debuted in 10th place with $2.2 million from 1,510 theaters, a smaller footprint compared to other new releases. Aleshea Harris directed the R-rated film in her feature directorial debut.

Adapted from her 2018 play, the story centers on two sisters (Broadway favorite Kara Young and Mallori Johnson) on an epic quest for revenge. Is God Is holds a sterling 97% on Rotten Tomatoes as well as a solid “B+” grade on CinemaScore.

Paramount’s concert film Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D), which also opened last weekend, plunged to the No. 13 spot.

Despite strong reviews, the movie earned a paltry $800,000 from 2,613 theaters in its sophomore outing, a harsh 88% decline from its soft $7.5 million start. Ticket sales stand at $9.2 million domestically and $25 million globally.

Hit Me Hard and Soft was produced for $20 million through a partnership with Paramount and Interscope Records.

The longtime New York Observer film critic, who died this morning, “reviewed films and wrote about movie stars in prose that was graceful and evocative but often also the literary equivalent of a poison-tipped dagger plunged between the shoulder blades,” Clyde Haberman writes in Reed’s New York Times obituary. Years before film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert were talk show regulars, Reed regularly visited The Dick Cavett Show and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, starting in the late 1960s. Reed was a celebrity roaster on The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast, he was a judge on The Gong Show and a panelist on To Tell the Truth. In 1986, Reed began co-hosting the syndicated At the Movies, replacing Siskel and Ebert, who exited after a contract dispute. He co-hosted At the Movies with Bill Harris through 1990. Reed played himself twice on Fox’s The Critic and was also known for his movie appearances, from Myra Breckinridge to 1978’s Superman, where he played himself.

To me the saddest movie I ever seen would be "What Dreams May Come" starring Robin Williams and Cuba Gooding Jr. It deals with death and after life and and quest of Robin Williams after life to reunite with his wife who committed suicide. Very heavy subject matter and it seem Robin is sobbing thru out the whole movie with "painted" back ground scenery that add to the atmosphere sadness of this movie. Definitely not a date night movie :)
