What do you do when the character that finally made your studio feel successful is suddenly taken away? Long before Mickey Mouse was even a sketch from Ub Iwerks's pencil, Walt Disney’s first massive breakout superstar was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. But a brutal corporate betrayal changed animation history forever.

In this episode of West of Neverland, we dive deep into the archives to look at Oswald the Lucky Rabbit—the character who helped Walt Disney’s young studio find its footing, gave his artists the ultimate playground to master "rubber-hose" animation, and served as the absolute catalyst for the creation of Mickey Mouse. We trace his complete journey from his rejected prototype film, his evolution through the Lantz era, his triumphant return via Bob Iger's famous Al Michaels trade, and his modern evolution into the public domain.
Cartoon Network and Adult Swim...

Adult Swim Announces Cartoon Network Docuseries, Plus Two Anthology Anniversary Specials from "Robot Chicken" (EXCLUSIVE)
by Kambole Campbell
June 26, 2026

Cartoon Network and Adult Swim have announced that for the celebration of its 35th anniversary, Cartoon Network has a five-part documentary series in production.

The series, set to release in 2027, will explore the network and its idiosyncratic artists across multiple eras from the “Checkerboard· to the “Dimensional” and beyond, taking in the foundations of the company as a custodian for classic cartoons to a force for original work from artists who would become vastly influential to the medium of animation as a whole.

The docuseries plans to blend a wealth of archival footage with newly filmed interviews with legendary artists sharing stories of their work and their perspectives on Cartoon Network.

“Most sane people don’t write a memoir at 35 years old, but Cartoon Network has never been sane,” said Cartoon Network and Adult Swim President Michael Ouweleen.

“Three decades of audiences have had their childhoods shaped by the iconoclastic series and on-air voice of Cartoon Network, and now creators across every medium are drawing from that influence.” Ouweleen added: “When incredibly talented Cartoon Network alumni pitched the idea of capturing the spirit behind the network — from Atlanta to Burbank, across the decades — there was never any question.

Cartoon Network started with a library of cartoons but quickly became something much bigger: a cultural force and an object lesson in what courage and originality can mean. The only question that this documentary doesn’t answer is the most essential one the tagline that helped define the brand from the beginning: You with us?”

Also in production is a Cartoon Network special from the stop-motion comedy series “Robot Chicken”, produced for Adult Swim by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios.

Known for its spiky pop culture parodies and quickfire style, “Robot Chicken”, itself 20 years old, will look to Cartoon Network’s characters this time, a first look image showing a table featuring Courage The Cowardly Dog and Johnny Bravo alongside characters from Scooby Doo. with the special planned for release in 2027.

Additionally, the celebrated stop‑motion series from co‑creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, is also in production on a second special for the 25th anniversary of its own network, Adult Swim.

The special is set to premiere Sunday, Aug. 30 on Adult Swim, and and will be available to stream Aug. 31 on HBO Max.

“Robot Chicken Adult Swim Special“ sees every iconic character in Adult Swim’s history, including the likes of Assy McGee and Brock Sampson from “Venture Bros.” alongside characters from “Aqua Teen Hunger Force,” “Metalocalypse” and “Black Jesus,” on a cruise ship celebrating the network’s 25 years.

The cruise turns into a disaster – perhaps inevitable with all of these particular personalities on board – potentially spelling a watery doom for all on the trip.

“Hasbro, the U.S. entertainment giant that acquired the Peppa Pig brand in 2019, is asking child actors on the animated series to sign over their voices to artificial intelligence under new contract terms,” reports Deadline’s Jake Kanter. “Industry sources said AI clauses are now frequently appearing in kids’ contracts on TV and film projects, but Hasbro’s embrace of the terms on Peppa Pig has become a lightning rod for concern.” Nearly 1,000 people have signed an open letter, organized by the Agents of Young Performers Association (AYPA), condemning AI terms on an “international children’s franchise.”

You remember the little gnome in the red hat riding his fox through the forest. But do you remember that the show ended with him and his wife walking into the mountains to die and turning into trees? You did not dream it. It was real.

The World of David the Gnome looked like the gentlest Nick Jr. comfort cartoon ever made. Underneath the soft music and the mushroom houses, it was one of the strangest children's shows ever imported to American television: a Spanish and Dutch environmental fable about medicine, aging, grief, and the quiet beauty of the natural cycle, built around a three hundred and ninety nine year old fox riding woodland doctor.

In this episode we trace the wild international pipeline behind it. A nineteen seventy six Dutch book that pretended gnomes were a real biological species. A Spanish studio run by the man they called the Spanish Walt Disney. A Canadian English dub with a startling Miramax credit. Prestige voice casting from Tom Bosley and Christopher Plummer. And the series finale that the creator himself called one of the biggest mistakes of his career, because he accidentally wrote his hero permanently out of the franchise by turning him into a tree.

This is the cartoon that looked like a bedtime story and behaved like a forest hospice pamphlet. It comforted us, and then it told us the truth. If you grew up on this show, this one is going to hit somewhere you were not ready for.
Which forgotten show do you SWEAR was real but nobody else believes you? Drop it in the comments. I read every single one.

When Nintendo launched Super Mario Bros in 1985 it seemed to make Mario a huge celebrity and when The Super Mario Bros Super Show debuted it made Mario an even bigger celebrity but I never knew the actual story why The Super Mario Bros Super Show got cancelled. Was it due to low ratings or was there troubles on the set of the show? Because with Super Mario Bros games still selling for Nintendo Wii and Nintendo they should someday revive The Super Mario Bros Super Show

In this video I cover the complete history of Nickelodeon's three original Nicktoons. I start all the way back in the 1970s when Nickelodeon was called something else entirely before it rebranded, I cover the history of Doug, the History of Rugrats, the history of Ren & Stimpy, including all the necessary and relevant reboots and spinoffs that each of those shows spawned. You may recognize some part of this video if you've already seen my first three ever videos. Essentially, those were curated to make this ultimate compilation/marathon video, and I've also included additional context and details, as well as filmed a proper intro, outro, and transition pieces as well. Okay, thanks, see ya soon. This video was researched, written, and presented by Tom Breaker, edited by Mello Axe.

Before we get into Doug, Rugrats, and Ren & Stimpy, we should take some time for context. Just what was the Nicktoons project? What was the state of children's television animation going into the 1990s? Who was Vanessa Coffey and what motivated her to step up? And what about the five pilots that didn't get greenlit? Welcome to the Nicktoons Era.
