Louise Lasser passed away at age 87 on July 6, 2026, just weeks shy of the 50th anniversary of her infamous July 1976 Saturday Night Live hosting gig. The actress, best known for her titular role in the 1970s satirical soap opera Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, died of natural causes at her home in Manhattan. Her controversial SNL appearance�which featured an opening monologue mimicking a breakdown and a locked dressing room�made her the first host effectively banned from returning by creator Lorne Michaels.

By "decisive", this doesn't necessarily mean that the host as a person/creative is divisive, within themselves. To put things into perspective, a person who is otherwise, considered or viewed as being controversial outside of SNL have had an unanimously acclaimed episode as a host. This is more concentrated on a person who is, otherwise, widely beloved outside of SNL, but ultimately, still have a divisive or even fully hated episode that they hosted. Simply put, their time hosting was divisive.
