Story by Alex Hoegler

One of the most beloved and highest-grossing entertainers of all time has been ranked as the biggest 'One Hit Wonder' for television actors.

Only so many A-listers in Hollywood have been fortunate enough to enjoy success in multiple television shows. That list includes Bryan Cranston (Malcolm in the Middle and Breaking Bad), Lucille Ball (I Love Lucy and The Lucy Show), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Seinfeld and Veep), and William Shatner (Star Trek and T. J. Hooker).

Though Louis-Dreyfus found great success after Seinfeld, the same cannot be said of the show's main star.

WatchMojo published its list of the 10 biggest one hit wonder television actors. Taking the top spot was none other than comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who portrayed a fictionalized version of himself on the NBC hit show.

The New York-based comedian and his close friend, Larry David, co-wrote the show. Its pilot, "The Seinfeld Chronicles", premiered on July 5, 1989. The show produced 180 episodes, with the two-part finale airing on May 14, 1998.

Seinfeld centered around the day-to-day lives of four friends in New York: Jerry Seinfeld, Elaine Benes (played by Louis-Dreyfus), Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards) and George Costanza (Jason Alexander).

Episodes focused on the characters' dating lives and random plots, such as George trying to deliver a good "comeback" to a coworker, Kramer getting addicted to a local roast chicken store, and Elaine clashing with The New Yorker over the lack of humor in their cartoons.

Many viewers agree that the iconic ‘90s sitcom "Seinfeld" ended in a way that wasn’t entirely befitting of the show. The finale more or less plays like a “greatest hits” compilation that caps things off with a whimper.

Jason Alexander, who played George Costanza, called the finale “a good episode, not a great episode” in a 2013 chat with the Television Academy.

In 2017, Jerry Seinfeld told an audience during a New Yorker Festival interview, “I sometimes think we really shouldn’t have even done it.”

He added, “There was a lot of pressure on us at that time to do one big last show, but big is always bad in comedy.”

For his part, Larry David, the show’s cantankerous co-creator, has remained one of the finale’s staunch defenders, and he ultimately riffed on it in "Curb Your Enthusiasm’s" own series finale.

It was something of a middle finger to those who didn’t like the way Seinfeld ended. “F--- you! You didn't like the first one? F--- you!" he quipped during an event at PaleyFest in 2024.
All nine seasons of Seinfeld will officially leave Netflix on October 1, 2026. The series is departing because the five-year global streaming contract—which Netflix originally secured from Sony Pictures Television in 2019 for over \(\$500\) million—expires after September 30, 2026. Because Seinfeld is owned by Sony, it is not tied exclusively to a single legacy studio like Disney or Warner Bros. Discovery. Consequently, as of mid-2026, no new streaming home has been announced. The iconic "show about nothing" is expected to spark a massive bidding war among rival services such as Peacock, Hulu, and Max.

Janeane Garofalo believes a chance encounter with Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David may have helped her land a role on "Seinfeld."

The comedy veteran played Jerry's girlfriend and doppelgänger Jeannie Steinman in two episodes of "Seinfeld" in 1996, during Seasons 7 and 8. Garofalo's Jeannie saves Jerry from being hit by a car in the episode "The Invitations." The pair gets engaged, but "The Foundation" sees them split. In a 2015 interview with GQ, Garofalo recalled visiting a friend while filming "The Larry Sanders Show" nearby, only to unexpectedly run into Seinfeld and David.

"I had a break, and I went to visit my friend Jill Soloway, who was working in an office that was in the same building as Jerry and Larry's office," Garofalo recalled. "I'm walking down the hall to find Jill, I pass an office door that's open, and inside are Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David having a conversation. I just went, 'Hello!' You know, in that way where you think you know people, but you don't. I knew Jerry just a little, little bit through other comics, and had never met Larry David. Then I kept walking. Within 24 hours, my agent said I had an offer to play that part."

Janeane Garofalo thought she was 'horrible' on Seinfeld

Playing Jeannie wasn't an easy task for Janeane Garofalo, and she opened up about the challenge she faced during her two-episode stint on "Seinfeld."

"I think I was horrible! I'm the only comic who can't do a Seinfeld impression!" Garofalo said. "Jeannie, my character, was supposed to be so much like Jerry that he hated her ... like when I sing along with the radio and people tell me to shut up, the same cadence as Jerry. I was supposed to sound like him. But I dialed it down. I felt like that would have been a little bit too much. And also, I was embarrassed because I felt I couldn't do it ... So while I was thrilled to be there, I felt I was failing miserably the whole time."

Garofalo's brief run as Jeannie clearly left an impression on "Seinfeld" fans. "Loved Garofalo in this role! She nailed it, and I love watching that episode again and again," one user wrote in a Reddit thread praising the character.

Best known for his unforgettable turn as Jackie Chiles, the fast-talking, high-powered attorney Kramer turns to in Seinfeld, actor Phil Morris joins us for a thoughtful, funny, and full-circle conversation about legacy, identity, and the unexpected paths that lead to a life in show business!

Phil shares how his portrayal of the character, famously inspired by Johnnie Cochran, took on a life of its own, leading to national commercial campaigns and even a memorable Honda spot directed by the Coen Brothers.

He recalls his Seinfeld audition, in Jerry’s office with Johnnie Cochran’s rhythms and intonations fresh in his mind since they shared the same barbershop!

But as Jackie Chiles’ spotlight brightened, the line between inspiration and frustration blurred, culminating in an unexpected cease and desist letter from Johnnie Cochran himself and an awkward barbershop encounter in which Johnnie had to concede that Phil is very funny!

Our conversation also explores Phil’s remarkable Hollywood lineage. As the son of Greg Morris, star of the original Mission: Impossible, Phil reflects on how his father’s network TV starring role suddenly transformed their family’s life, and handed them all the weight of being a uniquely high profile example of black representation on television at the time.

He shares how a single appearance by his father on The Dick Van Dyke Show helped pave the way for what would eventually become The Cosby Show, and how his own path into acting began almost by accident while working on set as a production assistant.

Phil went on to work alongside his father in the Mission: Impossible reboot, and today continues to bring depth to his roles across mediums, from live action to voice work. A devoted comic book fan with an extensive collection, he discusses how his love of superheroes informs performances like his portrayal of Silas Stone in Doom Patrol.

Phil also offers a behind-the-scenes look at the unique process of voice acting, whether collaborating in a room full of actors or performing solo, “opposite” himself, plus the emotional impact of meeting fans at conventions who credit his work with making a real difference in their lives. Then we get into an IMDB Roulette that delves deep into some roles while requiring discretion in discussing others!

The shocking death of Susan Ross on Seinfeld was universally praised as dark comedic genius, but it was actually a ruthless workplace execution disguised as a punchline. Driven by Jason Alexander's insecurity and an elitist cast, the network systematically bullied and fired actress Heidi Swedberg, weaponizing a toxic environment to protect their leading man and their billion-dollar ratings.

A 1983 screenplay written by Larry David titled "Prognosis: Negative" has surfaced online via a Reddit user who acquired it on eBay. The script, which features a noncommittal protagonist and inspired both Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm themes, was previously unproduced and long-rumored, with the title serving as a running joke in Seinfeld.
