We didn't do that when I was in school, but we did have to take swimming classes. We would have regular PE on Mondays & Tuesdays and then swim on Wednesdays and then go back to regular PE again on Thursdays & Fridays. :)

I hated it though...The fun part of swimming was the diving board, and they had to take it out in the spring of 2000 when two boys had accidents on it during evening swimming (the town I lived in was really small, so we only had two swimming pools - an outdoors one at a park and the indoors one at my school). Once that happened, it wasn't as fun going to swimming class :(

THANK GOD our school doesnt have pools. Hell, if we had to pass swimming in order to graduate, Id still be splashing around in the middle of the pool. I hate the deepend. I dont go into pools where my feet cant touch the ground with my head still being above water. Freaks me out.

Nope and I had never even been to the pool at my school until this year when my friend kept dragging me to all of her swim meets. I'm such a sucky swimmer too, I'll take the jacuzzi and jets anyday over a diving board and 11 feet deep ends.

 I know how you feel, though! (in a way!)

The swimming pool @ my school had a 9 ft deep end, and that didn't freak me out...I could easily swim & reach the bottom and swim back up in one breath. It was the 10+ feet deep ends that really freaks me out. The community pool in my ACTUAL hometown has three (well, two) swimming pools - a lap pool area..you know, for the serious lap swimmers, a recreation pool for family swimming with the lap swimming area just off to one side. There's a divider between the two pools, and you can remove it to get one really big pool for the lap swimmers. The final swimming pool is where the diving boards are...there's two, and the pool is 12 feet deep. YIKES!!!!!!!!! It really freaks the hell out of me, so if I go diving in that pool, I have to immediately swim to where the ladders are.

We didn't have a pool in my HS. I love swimming though. I swim just about every day in the summer.

That's silly to have to pass a swimming test to graduate. What possible reason is this going to help you later in life? What if you never swim the rest of your life? It's like Algebra, I have absolute no use for it now yet everybody takes it in school, including me. What a waste of time. How about a requirement for learning how to balance a checkbook or writing a resume instead? Something you'll actually have a need for!

Swimming wasn't a requirement in my school but you could take it toward the 1 P.E. credit we needed so I took it one summer just to get my P.E. credit done and overwith. Our school didn't have a pool, so we used the one at the community college next to our school.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. We don't even have a pool at our school. Hey, we barely even have plumbing. Having a swimmng test is stupid.

We do. We have to take swim every other day in 9th grade for half the year, and then take a test in 10th grade, but you don't have swim then, just the test. It's stupid, I don't live in California by the ocean...I live in the middle of flipping NY, if I was going to move I'd learn how to swim then.
