Weezer Unveils Reissue, DVD Details

By Jonathan Cohen
Billboard

Weezer has nailed down details for an expanded reissue of its self-titled 1994 "Blue Album" and the retrospective DVD "Video Capture Device." Both items will arrive March 23 via Geffen. The CD's first disc will sport the original 10-track album, while a second disc, "Dusty Gems and Raw Nuggets," collects 14 rare cuts.

Among them are the B-sides "Mykel and Carli," "Susanne" and "My Evaline," live versions of "My Name Is Jonas," "Surfwax America," "Jamie" (acoustic) and "No One Else" (acoustic), previously unreleased "kitchen" recordings of "Paperface" and "Only in Dreams," pre-production versions of "Lullaby for Wayne" and "I Swear It's True" and the original album mix of "Say It Ain't So."

The Ric Ocasek-produced "Blue Album" peaked at No. 16 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 2.8 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. It spawned the rock airplay hits "Undone ("The Sweater Song")," "Buddy Holly" and "Say It Ain't So."

"Video Capture Device" is loaded with 13 music videos, including the director's cut of "El Scorcho," a home-made clip for "Pink Triangle" and a self-described "indie-style low budget" clip for "Slob." Also featured are live versions of "Jamie" and "In the Garage," footage from the making of the "Blue Album" and the group's spring 1995 tour and "Say It Ain't So" live from "The Late Show With David Letterman."

Weezer's official Web site reports that the DVD will also boast "a selection of five 'Raw Nuggets' from 1991-2002, generally rougher footage, but still of very cool events, plus a selection of the TV ads crafted over the years to promote the release of the band's albums. There will be optional band commentary on all the music videos and on about half of the 'Documentary' and 'Raw Nuggets' pieces."

As previously reported, Weezer is working on its fifth studio album with producer Rick Rubin.

I love their debut album, dunno if I want the expanded version tho.

Universal charges way too much for those expanded edition cd's. $30 while most of the single-discs are $10. Who really wants to pay $17 more for the "Expanded" Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John which only has one bonus track on it?

They should drop the prices a bit and I think more people would buy them. I have several of Weezer's b-sides anyways so I dunno if Blue Album is worth $20 more for 14 extra songs

That's cool.

Any idea when the fifth studio album is going to be released?

It has four bonus tracks:

Whenever You're Ready (We'll Go Steady)
Jack Rabbit
Screw You (Young Man's Blues)
Candle In The Wind (acoustic mix)

Plus, it's a hybrid SACD, with a stereo layer and a 5.1 layer.

oh ok, I do have Jack Rabbit on Don't Shoot Me's remaster. I do think $17 more than 4 tracks (1 of which is widely available on a cd most EJ fans own) is a little too much. I know it's a hybrid SACD, but you can get the Police's GH hybrid SACD for a regular cd price.

I think $20-22 would be a more reasonable price for the Universal "Expanded CD" collection than $30. Some of them look like they're worth their while, but when they cost over twice as much as the single disc does, it's a turnoff. Who wants to spend $30 for the 2-disc Gin Blossoms "New Miserable Experience" cd when for $2 on ebay, you can get the single-disc, lol. That's $28 more

I agree with you there, especially considering the Police's Every Breath You Take hybrid includes the much sought-after "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da '86" on the 5.1 layer (much, much better than the "Don't Stand So Close To Me" remake).

anyone get it yet? How much is it? Weezer is not generally the style of music I listen to, but I have always thought their debut album was a flawless 41 minutes of pure pleasure. I also loved Pinkerton, I haven't really given the last 2 albums as much a chance tho but I loved some of the songs, But I was older and not listening to that style of music as much as when I was 16.

Anybody have this cd for $20 or less? I'd like to get it, but not for $30. It is one of my favorite albums of any genre from the 1990's though.

Best Buy has it for $19.99, but whey you get it with the DVD (for $9.99) it is $2 off, the problem is....

i went to BestBuy, Target, Walmart, KMart, Sears, Meijer's and got each of them to call their other stores, and not one of them has the new weezer anywhere in MY city - every one of them is sold out

i had to settle for a raincheck, but at least i can still get it for the $2 off deal

:(

I just hope they didn't **** up the album with heavy-handed mastering (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?s=&threadid=90415).

MTV says weezer are planning a fall release for the as-yet-untitled 5th album
http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1485919/20040323/weezer.jhtml?headlines=true

but this comes from Pat: "...(Pat said) the band is really loving working with (Rick) Rubin and they are pretty happy with the material they've got going and "hope to have something in the can by September"...he has "no clue whether or not they'll tour at all this summer"...he is "looking forward to getting this album in the can and doing a lot of touring."...and that album 5 will be "more of a return to Blue Album style"...(Pat) guesses it might be out "around Christmas time"...and he "hopes the hardcore fans like it"..."
