View Full Version : "somewhere under the rainbow"
"the only way to fly"
dave and maddie come to know a girl claiming to be a leprechaun looking for her pot of gold. after finding her gold under a metal rainbow shaped bridge, she decides to go back to ireland. they take her to LAX and get into another great chase scene. one of the best chase scenes i can recall because it was so unusual.
dave found out that her father and two other men robbed a bank in 1864 of gold. and that was the loot. she found out her father's past from the man chasing them. she gave him her luggage he thought contained the gold. after she gave up her leprechaunness, she handed david a key to an airport locker. it of course, contained the gold.
one thing i didn't like about this episode is the stereotypical irish music they play all through it. i have nothing against irish music. it's just that when a person says they are from ireland, the music starts and never ends. but you never hear any other time. but for about 52 minutes, you can't escape it.
personal note, i love LAX. it is my favourite airport in the world. and i have been to many. the chase scene through the ticket line, baggage claim area, and the terminal brings back great memories for me. well, except one. at the baggage claim area, i found my luggabe beaten so bad from handling, i had to send it off to be repaired. really. glad they got better treatment.

david&maddie4ever 02-16-2004, 08:48 PM I definitely remember this one! :D The scene I remember most is the last one when David gets the key. I liked this one a lot...it was cool.
MulberryGal 09-06-2004, 08:13 AM This episode is ruined for me due to the absolutely worst Irish accent I've ever heard in my life (and that includes my own truly awful impression!!!). The accent starts off sounding American, through Indian, Scottish, English, South African, Dutch. Welsh and pretty much everything other than Irish.. Surely they could have hired an Irish actress!!?
Yuk yuk yuk!

:D
Tazmania 09-06-2004, 08:19 AM Not my favourite! Don't like the story!
I didn't notice a Dutch accent tho! LOL
kismet 09-06-2004, 10:54 AM I just hated this episode.
I thought Bruce and Cybill looked embarrassed to be in it.
I think this is another example of what happens when you have too much of a third party between Bruce and Cybill. It never works! :(
CindyK 09-07-2004, 02:37 PM hmmm There are a few things in this episode I kinda like. I sorta like the chase scene in the airport.... yeah, I know they break every rule of airport security, but back then, things weren't quite as strict as now.
I like how David is so eager to believe the client and then finally once Maddie comes around, David has done some investigation and now he is the one that says, this ain't no magic, its larceny.
I do like the discussion David and Maddie have in the car after David has revealed what he has learned about Kathleen's father... .how they both start out trying to put a rosy spin on a bad situation and then finally just both throw up their hands and say, forget it, the guy was scum!!
But yeah, the leprauchan bit did get a bit annoying after a while.
Carina13 09-20-2004, 01:45 PM Oh, I have to disagree in this one. I tought this episode was very cute :o I liked the story of the poor woman, she was crazy, but then... she was so innocent, so sweet... I was sorry for her, because she lived in another world, completely. But I liked the way Maddie and David helped her without hurting her feelings... Any person would have just called the police or something, they didn't, they made the poor woman happy... that was sweet.
About the accent, no idea, sorry :o didn't identify any accent.
The chase scene.... YES, it was unvelievable, but then... It`s ML!!! hihihihihi. And i laughed a lot with it. And the final... was great, with David finding the trasure... :D
MulberryGal 09-22-2004, 06:22 AM Yep, I guess it depends on how much you've heard proper Irish accents though.
I can confirm as a British person that the accent of the leprachaun was nothing like either a northern Irish or Southern Irish accent!!
:D

i'm sure it is the "accepted" irish accent for americans. it is the accent we are all knowledgable of as it is shoved down our throats. as for it being authentic, that is up for discussion.
MulberryGal 09-23-2004, 04:00 AM Hmm I'm not sure about that Bry, I've seen a lot of US TV and movies where people have Irish accents and they are far more convincing!! I'm sure Judy Garland did a passable Irish accent in Little Nelly Kelly....
Take it from me, this isn't just a bad accent, it really doesn't sound Irish at all! It's makes Dick Van Dyke's Cockney accent in Mary Poppins sound good!! :D :D
I'll stop ranting and raving about this now!!!

marla 09-28-2004, 10:47 PM i think this episode, is more 'regular' tv than most of the others have been, but it's still better than most tv.
maddie is truly beautiful in this episode and i love that she clapped for tinkerbell.
i keep thinking that this is a good episode for kids and the kid in all of us.
it did reveal to me that maddie is more about proof, what is, and david is more about feelings.
my granddaddy is from ireland and my grandmother is from england, and even though i'm american, my first accent was an english one (and still is if i get angry) and i have about a zillion relatives from that region of the world, and yet the accent was unfamilar to me. never the less, it worked because the story was a fairy tale, of sorts.

Ah, how true.
I have to agree with Carina, I thought most if this episode was pretty cute (if a little too sickly at times).
I love how even cynical Maddie is won around to like Kathleen. And Cybill looks really beautiful in this episode - even digging a hole in the dark. And Bruce looked rugged and slightly dangerous with the cut face
Great chase scene in the airport  but what happened at the very end? The phone rang and I missed it cause my friend was a bit upset so I had to concentrate fully on our conversation :(
But that accent  , never have I heard anything quite so bad. Definitely more Scottish than anything else. About 1 word a sentence sounded Irish!
CindyK 11-08-2004, 11:28 AM Don't you love David and his hole digging song...."Move Slow, Sweet Harriet" Hilarious!
I thought this episode was very silly also, but I did have a couple of things that were memorable for me.
First, I enjoyed seeing David being gentlemanly and chivalrous, even if he thought Kathleen was crazy. As they walked along the street at night, he was very protective, putting his arm around her. Very sweet.
Secondly, I think this episode has one of the funniest lines of the whole series: David tells Maddie that Kathleen killed the man with her hand. Maddie replies, "You mean like judo?" And David answers, "No. More like early Diana Ross." (Visualize the Supremes singing Stop in the Name of Love.)
That's one of the great things about Moonlighting for me. Even in episodes that are not necessarily my favorites, I can usually still find little gems to enjoy. :)
CindyK 11-21-2004, 02:20 PM There are some funny things in this episode.... the whole digging up the pot of gold is quite funny.
One other thing I noticed about this episode....Maddie wears her hair differently in this episode than in most others. She has it down straight and therefore it makes it seem longer. It looks much less fussed and teased over. I think it looks really nice.
Tazmania 11-22-2004, 11:27 AM I agree C, it looks very youthful!
And while I still don't like the leprachaun thing, I do like the way D&M interact with eachother in this one.
Allthough nothing is going on (yet) between them, there is already something "warm" in the air.......
Dutchie 11-22-2004, 05:02 PM Taz I love that picture:D
gypsygem81 02-16-2005, 03:32 PM I just watched this episode. I liked it, but that was without a doubt, absolutely the worst Irish accent I've ever heard! I read the posts about it over here before and thought that people were maybe being a bit harsh - surely it couldn't be as bad as that?! But it's worse! I wouldn't have even identified it as an Irish accent if I hadn't had known what it was meant to be!
Love Gem
MulberryGal 02-17-2005, 11:07 AM So glad you agree with me Gem! People possibly thought I was exaggerating, but this accent was SO bad, it was funny! Didn't ruin the episode, but it makes me wince every time I watch it...
Mul
gypsygem81 02-17-2005, 11:53 AM Haha - you're right, it was pretty laughable, and not that I've seen it I understand that you weren't exaggerating. Sometimes I couldn't understand what she was saying! I can't understand how no body could realise that she didn't sounds Irish. It didn't ruin the episode for me either - in fact, I really liked it. Reminded me a lot of the earlier X-Files episodes, where he's a 'believer' and she'n not and always wants proof.
Love Gem
Dutchie 02-18-2005, 04:58 PM Sometimes I couldn't understand what she was saying!
Wow, am I glad we have subtitles LOL
OH WAIT! I haven't seen this one with subtitles  Hmm, now I wonder if I understood it all
