View Full Version : Being an adult sucks.
dawsongirl 02-15-2004, 07:08 PM I went to college, graduated with good grades...can't get a job without like 800 years experience. Who the hell is supposed to give me that experience??
I hate my job. All my demented boss trusts me to do is sweep. SWEEP THE :censored: FLOOR! I'm supposed to be a secretary, not a damn cleaning lady. Now I know she thinks I stole $600 and stole (or something) a receipt. First of all, the guy who swears he gave me $600 is lying because I never saw the jerk. But as much as I deny ever seeing the guy, I know she thinks I'm lying. How could I possibly steal anything when I can only touch a damn broom???
So I look for another job. But guess what? I'm :censored: back to square one.
I am so mad and frustrated that I have a headache. It was so much easier when I was in school.
Hollow 02-15-2004, 07:11 PM im never getting a job. and im never moving out of my house. because i am too stupid and lazy to do either.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 02-15-2004, 07:15 PM Ugh, I never want to grow up. I wish I could go back to being 5 and stay that age forever. The older you get, the worse it gets. :(
Sorry you have to go through all of that crap, hope everything works out. :(
Czas na Zywiec 02-15-2004, 07:53 PM yea, I hate that. I was thinking of getting a job as a bartender (great pay, plus great tips) when move back to Chicago in 3 years, but every single ad I see in the paper for bartenders asks for tons of experience. how am I supposed to have "tons of experience" to qualify for a job if every job requires is?

EricIdlefan 02-15-2004, 08:06 PM Well, this might not help but I am happy being an adult even though I got fired by jerky Wal-Mart because I know more now since I will be 30 in October than I did in the ages of 18-29 which I considered baby-steps!! But in a way, I didn't have responsibilities as a woman in her late teens and early twenties than I did when I was 24 and wanted my independence and learned responsiblity!! I wish in a way I was a 18-22 year old because those were the fun years for me!!

Kazza 02-15-2004, 08:28 PM I had the same problem as dawsongirl and is so frustrating. Went to a million interviews and because of no experience; meant no work:rolleyes: . I was so fed up with all of it and kept telling the interviewers how in the heck I was gonna get experience if I wasnt given the chance to show off what I knew. They just gave me a look like I was talking a foreign language:mad: but it's the truth if you think about it

Lady T 02-15-2004, 08:32 PM I know the feeling, after I graduated with a degree in business from a very good university; the job market situation at the time was very poor, I ended up working at the drive thru at Jack in the Box:( ..and now with experience I am now working at my own business and making decent money as a production manager...
Penny Lane 02-15-2004, 09:19 PM Aw Cathy, I hope things get better for you very soon! I know this won't make you feel any better but I never had to worry about things like that! I got married just a few months out of high school and I have never had to work outside of my home.(Raising kids and taking care of the house was work enough!);)
But I have seen my adult kids having a hard time so I know what you are going through! Hang in there Sweetie! Things can only improve!:D
Brian 02-15-2004, 09:40 PM I know how you feel, Cathy, and I feel for you. I have been searching for a job since last June and there are not a lot of places hiring where I live. It has been frustrating for me. My brother-in-law hates his job because of the people running it. However, he has to work there for now because his degree was in engineering and he got laid off last year, plus he's got a child on the way. He was out of a job for several months.
PashminaDietrich 02-15-2004, 09:42 PM Oh, boy.. in a way I've been there. I graduated college in '99 feeling like everything was right in front of me. But then I ran into the same thing you did: nobody will hire you without experience, and you can't get experience unless you get hired. I finally ended up with a fly-by-night temp agency. My first assignment? Shagging footballs at the NFL Experience booth at the State Fair. I jammed two fingers and nearly fainted. The next one wasn't much better: I was sent to the headquarters of the Boy Scouts of America to do clerical work, but what I ended up doing was sorting sheets of stickers into packages of 25. I was pretty disillusioned for a while there, so I know where you're coming from. But don't worry: have faith in yourself and you'll bounce back.:)

Do you really truly think your parents are going to let you live there the rest of your life?
dawsongirl 02-15-2004, 10:40 PM Well, at least I'm not alone.
I'm just glad that I don't depend on this income to live. It mainly pays off my credit card, pays for gas, and pays off my student loan. And stuff I buy on ebay.

see, I wouldn't want to own one, just work at one. owning and working are two opposite of the spectrum. that's why owning a hotel sucks but working at one rocks.
also, I want to work at a bar in a nightclub scene, not just one where old men come in to comaplain about their wives, sex lives, money issues, etc.

I mean..think about it! Just read over your posts. You have megga hatred and I think you need some counselling. Who am I? Someone who'd NOT want to meet your asss on a dark street. Too creepy!!

How dare she accuse you of stealing $600. And what kinda boss wouldnt fire an employee for stealing $600? Im not saying she should fire you- especially since you didnt steal.. but if I was a boss and felt like that, Id fire them. But if she did you could totally sue, and then you would be the boss!

Get married and stay home and raise the kids, I would love to do that. That is my ideal life but don't tell my mom, I think she would kill me.
I feel for you, Cathy. When I was first looking for a job, no one would hire me because I had no experience. The only reason I got the office job I have now is because my family is really close with the owners and they personally offered me a job. And I have a feeling that having office experience at 18 will pay off for me in the long run.

That's kinda how I got this one too. My mom works for my boss' accountant. And it would be good if I could last a year or two, but I really doubt that.

Eddie Haskell 02-16-2004, 07:16 AM In my younger days I was applying for jobs and not having much success. I came across one place where I really wanted to work but didn't feel the interview went very well.
Three days later I called the HR rep and said, "Let me work there for free for a week or two and if it doesn't work out, then what have you lost?" I figured I wasn't working/making money anyway, so what the hell.
The HR rep asked why I would do such a thing when they could just get two weeks of work out of me and then toss me out the door at no cost to them. I said because I trusted them and had faith in myself that they would see what kind of worker I was and want to keep me around.
Well, she told me to come in on Monday morning and they'd see how it went. I worked for a week and then they hired me full-time. When I received my first paycheck there was two weeks pay there so I never did work for nothing. A couple of months later the HR rep told me that legally they couldn't have me work there for nothing. I knew that all along as my sister is a legal-aid. Either way it worked out and if need be I would have worked there for free for a week just for the work experience.
Sometimes you just have to be a little innovative to get what you want.

animalcrackers 02-17-2004, 07:29 AM I think alot of us have been thru this situation. I'm the type of person who won't work at just any job. So I basically stay at my crummy job, but I still look in the classifides every Sunday. And either they want experience or it's too far away. Then at my job I daydream ALOT, about being a kid again or being a lady of lesiure. And I don't think I know of anybody who's loves their job. To me your place of work shouldn't be a place that you dread going to everyday. The workplace should be pleasant and have some fun involved. What's with these companies?
isiahthomas 02-17-2004, 12:23 PM Dawsongirl this is a good topic u posted. Going to a job everyday does suck especially if it's something u don't like but you're just going there everyday just to get a paycheck. Times are hard out here & i don't see it getting any better as far as the job market goes. I read a article in the newspaper about the job situation in Cleveland & it's terrible like it's always been. City workers have been getting laid off like policemen, firemen, trash workers. People have been getting laid off from factory jobs. S**t is just really messed up out here. Then u got these a**holes who are in charge at these jobs who do the hiring & they only wanna hire people with experience. I know exactly where you're coming from when u say how is a person supposed to get experience when nobody will give u a chance to prove yourself. I've had a hard time finding a full time job since May of last yr. If it wasn't for my brother, i'd be unemployed right now. He got me a job as a cigarette merchandiser but it's only part time. I was fired from Walmart last May cause my supervisor told me i was too slow stocking the shelves. Nobody can be that damn fast stocking the shelves with merchandise. U gotta find out where all the stuff goes & the pallets that they used to bring to me would be stacked to the ceiling. I ain't no damn slave & i ain't gonna let no supervisor treat me like one. A lot of temporary factory jobs in Cleveland wanna pay u $5.15 or $5.50 & keep u a temporary as long as they can so they don't have to pay u any benefits which to me is like slavery. How is anybody supposed to live off of that salary? Then when u go to college & graduate thinkin you're gonna get a job in the career that u want, u end up having a hard time finding work that u wanna do while the college got rich off of u if u weren't lucky enough to get a scholarship. Everybody can't afford college especially blacks. Financial aid isn't really a good thing either cause u gotta pay that money back & it takes forever to do that. Being a adult not only sucks but life sucks period & i'll be glad when i'm dead & gone cause i hate life especially when it comes to finding a job & dealing with your co-workers & your supervisor who can be a**holes.
EricIdlefan 02-17-2004, 01:31 PM I will be glad when I die(hopefully not for a long, long, long time!! Ha! Ha!) that eternal life in heaven I will be so, so, happy and so, so, blessed because there is no hurt, no crying, no worrying, over a billion and billions of things that is so excellent and wonderful in heaven!!
isiahthomas 02-17-2004, 01:43 PM Yeah being dead is great cause u don't have to worry about things such as keeping a job & wondering how you're gonna pay your bills if u get laid off. U don't have to worry about ignorant people hating u for no reason. People are your biggest problem on this earth. That's something that my father told me & i will never forget it. As long as u got people on this planet, expect anything to happen cause there are so many ignorant people on this earth no matter what race they are. I used to be so happy about being black & loving my black people but that's gone out the window cause i don't think like that anymore. How can blacks expect people to love them & be proud of who we are when they keep acting ignorant on a daily basis? I don't think ignorance is gonna ever come out of our system. I guess it's just something we're born with. We can't blame racism, living in the ghetto, slavery as the reason why we're ignorant.
