View Full Version : "the dream sequence always rings twice"
"but this is television, so we won't get into that"
man! hard to believe that as big a fan of orson welles that i am, the one episode with him introducing it, is one of my least favourites. i mean, it's like so many shows make it a rule to have one episode where they go back in time. i always look at this as an excuse to play dressup with wardrobe of another era for the cast.
and this one had to be in black and white to give it a mood.
two versions of the same murder from the '40's. they both take sides in the argument. to me, the best part of this episode is the final scene where dave and maddie "argue" with their thoughts at each other.
i give my rating higher than i prefer, but that is because it would be unfair to rate it based on my disdain for the concept.
rating: 5
Dr. Jazz 02-15-2004, 12:47 AM I couldn't agree with you more Bobby. This was also one of my least favorite episodes. I feel exactly the same way you do about "dream sequence" episodes, I can't stand it when any show does one.
david&maddie4ever 02-15-2004, 05:37 PM Hmm...my opinion on this one is usually based on what everybody else says, because, frankly, I don't remember it that well. :o A lot of people say it's their favorite episode, and others despise it. *shrugs* I really can't say. :D
Dutchie 07-17-2004, 07:43 AM Just to bump this thing again, I'd have to say I didn't like this episode at first. It was one of the first episodes I saw from Moonlighting and I didn't really get what was going on. About a year later they aired this episode again (apperantly Veronica didn't have anything else to do, better for us Dutchies LOL) and I liked it so much that I was glad I taped it. I think I liked it better then because I knew the story between Maddie and David better:) I really loved to hear Cybill sing!
"I told ya I love ya now get out!"
greets Steph:D
I have to disagree with those who don't like this one. I think the Dream Sequence is one of the most clever episodes of the series. I admit that when I saw it the first time, I was sort of disappointed that it wasn't "really" David and Maddie. But now I see that it was a way to push the envelope a little and allow the audience to see Bruce and Cybill in some very sexy scenes without letting David and Maddie get there yet. I love the episode!
Dutchie 07-17-2004, 09:44 AM Hey CyBr we think alike:D Welcome to SO:wave:
greets Steph
Tazmania 07-17-2004, 12:25 PM And SEXY it was!!!
I love it that they both have their own version of the story.
And I think the whole thing looked really old! Very well done by the writers.
And Cyb is a classic beauty! That face looks good in color and black/white.
Bruce is like gary grant/humphrey you name it!!
Terrific epi
Tazmania 07-17-2004, 12:27 PM classic!!

Aloha, CyBr. Welcome to SO and the Moonlighting board!
I totally agree with this statement...it was a very smart move on the part of the writers.

CindyK 07-18-2004, 04:05 PM Oh my lord!! How can someone not appreciate this wonderful episode?
This one is just so cool with all it classic film noir moments and references. And I don't think Maddie has ever been sexier or David's lines any funnier. This 40's style romance fits Bruce and Cybill so well. They should have done more more more of these type of roles together.
I can show this episode to non-believers and they come away fans of Moonlighting.

I agree with that. Mads looked absolutely stunning in the pictures I've seen (the one Taz posted was my avatar for awhile), and based on some of the lines I remember, Davey was just in his glory.
Carina13 07-18-2004, 06:44 PM Yeah, I agree with you, girls... My mom and I were talking about that the other day, when we saw this episode. Cybill looks like a woman from the 40's. She´s just perfect for that time, her hair, her style... She looks wonderful in the '40s fashion, she realy does. And Bruce is also fantastic there. I really liked this episode. It was a great one.
And the part when they're arguing outside that later on they kiss, It's just amazing, in that momento we really here Maddie and David talking. Or at least, that's what I feel, that it could be them...

kismet 07-20-2004, 07:02 PM Cybill and "black & white" go together so beautifully. I think that this was one of the best episodes. I loved having them play other characters -- they were so into each other in both of the plotlines. Orson Welles adding the intro was an extra delight. Cyb almost popped out of her nightgown in that one picture, don't you think? Actually, I think they got this one by the censors cuz I think you can see a little something extra if you peek.:happyface
Tazmania 07-21-2004, 05:08 PM What extra do you see Kismet? A nipple?
kismet 07-21-2004, 07:29 PM I thought I saw little something extra on my videotape - could it have been that? I think so.

I totally agree with that. I think "...Dream Sequence..." showcases her beauty better than any other episode.

I just loved them together.

CindyK 08-08-2004, 07:25 PM Ok here is a mind blower...... you know how there were two dreams....two rather different dreams wherein each saw their alter-ego as the good one that was wronged by the bad nature of the other person...... well just imagine what would it be like to have the Rita in Maddie's dream hook up with the Zach in David's dream.....or even more trouble, what about the Zach in Maddie's dream hook up with the Rita in David's dream...... now that would be dangerous!!!
kismet 08-08-2004, 07:42 PM Originally posted by CindyK

What a great concept! Put the two "baddies" together. Now THAT would make a great movie. This is so exciting to think of what could/would happen. My mind is reeling...
Tazmania 08-09-2004, 05:01 PM That makes a whole exciting new episode!
marla 09-21-2004, 10:53 PM this episode was really fun. with orson welles introducing it, it had to be.
the animal/sexist arguement was the funniest fight so far.
maddie says the man killed his girlfriends husband to have his girlfriend.
david:
why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?
maddie:
your an animal
david:
your a sexist. you know what a sexist is?
maddie:
of course i do. i'm looking at one.
david:
so am i!
david looks great in bed when he's just been woken up and in a undershirt. my crush deepens.
sexiest scene: both of them chasing after the ice cube on the floor.
it's funny in a way, they are both such chickens about each other-that they are hostile to each other (at least in their thoughts)
and from their dreams-they are both afraid of the same thing, and they are both wrong.
in davids dream, zack was playing most of the instruments in the band- at the same time!
during the arguement david refers to a page missing from his script!
just a sit back, relax, with or without friends and enjoy an experience that's fun and sexy and in a way-not even television.
I have waited years to see this episode and NO, its on next weekend and I have to go out. I will miss it :crying:
Tazmania 10-24-2004, 10:17 AM Tamm there is a solution!
don't go out!!:D
I have an appointment, I have to go out :( and I do want to. I just wish the video could timer record the digital channels. Instead I will just need to be patient for it to come around again.
Dutchie 10-24-2004, 10:38 AM Can no one else tape it for u???
This is a great episode:(
Tazmania 10-24-2004, 12:55 PM Tamm you're gonna miss one of the BEST!
That's life! And since I have waited nearly 20 years a little longer won't hurt
Dutchie 10-24-2004, 02:21 PM That's so sad...:(
Tazmania 11-01-2004, 02:14 PM Hi Guys
I asked Bruce about how he experienced making this episode and this is his answer ( I really appreciate him answering):

CindyK 11-01-2004, 02:24 PM Taz,
I read this. Good going, getting a response. But please be cautious where you post this as he and his admin have requested that the fans not post content or pictures from his site other places.
I might suggest just tell people what he said or put a link here for others to go read instead of posting his response.
:)
Tazmania 11-01-2004, 02:52 PM I don't understand?
What's wrong with it?
Why is that protected so much?
Anyway I have posted the link now....
Dutchie 11-01-2004, 02:59 PM NICE TAZ!
I didn't even saw the question, thanks for asking it:D
CindyK 11-01-2004, 03:08 PM Taz
You probably weren't aware and I am not busting you. I just want to prevent any problems for you. At Bruce's site on the entry to the forum it says:
PLEASE NOTE: Due to our ever-growing numbers and huge amount of posts on the forums, posts will only be archived for 30 days. Content posted on the forums is the sole property and for the exclusive use of Brucewillis.com any unauthorized reproduction by any means will be treated as a violation of Title 17 of the US Copyright Laws. All violators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent permitted by law.
And whenever any fan has asked on the board about posting something he has said off the board, he has said no, don't.
I can understand why. If he lets one person do it, he will have to let all. And then someone could post something he says out of context or misquoted and make him look bad.
It isn't you or your thread personally. They just have to worry about so many people and so many things said.
Tazmania 11-01-2004, 03:23 PM Never read that but that's maybe because overhere we don't worry so much about protected rights and stuff.
Anyway thanks for the explanation and I didn't feel busted, don't worry.
If Bruce wants it this way it's fine by me, no problemo!
Greetz Taz

Carina13 11-05-2004, 07:59 AM Well done, Taz! You got the answer! :D I liked what he said, cool! ;)
But... how's that, Taz? Ahaha Why would he said that? Because you said he didn't talk about ML? hummmm well, anyway... it was good, he answered
;)
SweetCakes 12-29-2004, 03:11 PM Reading this topic, I realised that I'd actually read it before, a month or so ago. Yet I don't remember having read any of the other topics on this board before! Weird
I have to say, I ADORE this episode. I've only seen it once but I thought it was brilliant. The idea of the two dreams is really clever, and black and white seems to add a magical dimension to everything. I love hearing Cybill sing (I bought the Moonlighting soundtrack especially to get the two songs!) and she looks so stunning in her costumes.
Roll on the DVDs so I can watch it again! :D
gypsygem81 04-16-2005, 03:39 PM I love love love this episode. It's my favourite, by far. I love the whole 40's concept and the way they tell both stories using different narrative styles, and the musical aspect, especially hearing Cybill sing. What I wanted to know is, does anyone know anything about the song I Told Ya I love Ya Now Get Out? Who sang it originally? My copy of the soundtrack says that it was written by Lou Carter, Herb Ellis and John Frigo. I've never heard it before and was just wondering who else has done it.
Love Gem
Dutchie 04-17-2005, 06:13 AM I googled it and the first one they mention is Anita O'Day
Tazmania 04-17-2005, 07:36 AM And on Emule the only artist that comes out is Cybill!
gypsygem81 04-17-2005, 08:24 AM Thanks Steph. I have heard of her. I did google it myself a while ago, but I think I must have put 'you' instead of 'ya' in.

MulberryGal 06-01-2005, 03:47 AM I was just reading the latest Moonlighting strangers fanzine and read something about this episode... I'm sure we all remember the scene with Bruce/David/ sitting in the window, with his shirt off playing the trumpet with a neon hotel sign flashing? According to the fanzine, when you first see the scene, all you can see is the word "HOT" !!!
I don't know why, but it made me giggle....such a brilliant episode!
Mul
chelsea_05 06-02-2005, 06:17 PM I enjoyed 'dream sequence' alot.
i liked how it was set in the 40s n how you got to see both arguments.
I couldnt believe how much of a good singer cybill is.
She looked pretty stunning
love chelsea xxx
kismet 06-03-2005, 09:25 AM I watched the DVD of this episode yesterday.
Loved it, loved it, loved it even more.
Those kisses at the window were pretty intense.
They were the best kissers ever on TV. I could feel every kiss right down to my toes. :D
MulberryGal 06-15-2005, 09:49 AM Oh I love those kisses at the window as well, Kis!! Somehow they work even better because it's in black and white..
Sigh... ;)

MonaCK 06-15-2005, 11:09 AM I'm sure that I'd seen this episode once before, but I really didn't remember it. so it was all new to me.
What a -great- episode. Like others have said, it was a way to relieve some of that sexual tension between David and Maddie without having the two of them do the deed yet. I loved the way it was played out... and the contrast between the two dreams.
Dutchie 06-15-2005, 01:34 PM I saw this episode in Italian last monday. I don't understand that language so I could pay more attention to the characters they played. I think Cybill had more fun singing "I told ya I love ya" then "Blue Moon". Oh and I love it when she enters the room while Bruce is playing the trompet and the sign says HOT! LOL never noticed that before :D
I just watched this one for the first time.
Wow
It is wonderful, it might just be my favourite. I love almost everything about it. I watched it again right away I liked it so much.
Wow
The DVDs are wonderful, what a great weekend of Moonlighting
ryangie97 06-28-2005, 11:13 PM I loved this episode. I remember when it aired being a little disappointed that I didn't get to see the real Dave&Maddie but when I watch it now I have a whole new appreciation for it. I loved so many of the scenes, ones mostly already posted here so I won't go into that. I loved David's line in this one, on the phone with Maddie before it goes to b&w-"not only are you a sexist, but you are the sexiest sexist it has ever been my good fortune to saturize....saturize, scrutinize, fantisize, etc. etc.." I actually got my husband, who never wanted to watch the show with me, to watch it and he loved it and now is watching other episodes as well.
Still loving it :) I watched it again last weekend
caitybelle 06-30-2005, 12:35 AM This one is just freakin cool. I really have nothing new to say than that -- ya'll about covered it all. one of my personal favorites is how rita looks when zach enters the club and she's singing at the piano (in david's dream) -- the way her hair is, how she looks at him, how he reacts -- everything just plays so perfect. It's like you know right away the poor guy hasn't a snowball's chance, you know? so perfectly raymond chandler, that moment....
gypsygem81 06-30-2005, 02:35 AM Yeah, it's really great to see her play such a different kind of character to Maddie in David's dream, and she's so good at it.
Love Gem
Dutchie 06-30-2005, 03:11 AM I like the Rita in Davids dream better! (not that I want to be like her) She can handle Zack totally hehe. And I love the song "I told ya I love ya". Got it in my head when I woke up this morning.
caitybelle 07-01-2005, 11:09 AM I agree on Rita in David's dream too -- you can tell Cybill enjoyed finally being aloud to prowl on him.
While we're on the subj. of Dream sequence..... MUL i LOVE the hot pic you have under your name. The "oh yeah" just cinches it.
MulberryGal 07-01-2005, 11:20 AM Hi Caitybelle,
Thanks, I love my new avatar, it's all down to Mona who posted some great new ones on the board! I saw this one with the HOT on it and had to use it!!
Oh yes, you can tell how much Cybill seemed to be enjoying this episode!!
Mul
gypsygem81 07-01-2005, 11:50 AM I think David's Rita is a lot more like Cybill than Maddie! She sure looks like she had fun playing her. This is just the best episode!
Love Gem
Dutchie 07-01-2005, 02:01 PM I think David's Rita is a lot more like Cybill than Maddie!
So true! Only that this Rita can be mean. Cybill is not mean (that's not what I think). But they are both strong women and that's why I think they are alike. They are both jazzy too! hehe :D

I just found it. I love the boinking one. that is hysterical! also saved the oh-yeah. b/c Oh. Yeah.
caitybelle 07-01-2005, 09:35 PM Rita is so fabulously 40s though -- I just keep thinking of like "The Big Sleep" and all those Bacall type flicks... or Marlene Deitrich. SO fabulous. And in a weird cosmic way though you know he's going down in flames you sort of can't help but admire the way she does it.
Personally, I always found David's dream to be the more plausable(-ible?) of the two, b/c Rita had motive. Plus it has the floating signs, and that's just awesome.
--Wow. Could she make an entrance, or what?
Tazmania 07-06-2005, 05:11 PM Here's a couple of pics I think you will all enjoy!
Tazmania 07-06-2005, 05:12 PM The piano scene is very sexy! :D
Dutchie 07-06-2005, 05:22 PM Young smirking Bruce in a tux! Now that's somethin' :D

not just you two, Dutchie..
Hey Taz, where did you get those pics? they're from the spanish sat channel that broadcasts ML now (Calle13 - that's obvious  ). i'm downloading them from emule a week or two after they're been on air (i don't have got sat tv), so i've just began 5th season when i went back from Almeria (a city of Andalucia) few days ago (i want more beach!!! beach beach beach! :crying: ).
*Leanne* 07-22-2005, 03:10 PM I love this episode. It is so different from the others but just as good. I especially love David's dream when he is sittin by the window "I knew I looked good this way" lol! Cybill and Bruce both look amazing in black and white.
Watched this on dvd yet again the other day. Still loving it but I do wish I had been able to watch when it first aired to get the full impact.
This of course goes for all the key episdoes.
Never mind all these years later it still "sizzles";)
kismet 10-11-2005, 07:25 PM I sure does sizzle. I love it more and more each time I watch it. It's a timeless classic.
