View Full Version : What is your favorite slow boring yet ulimately great movie
dlemond 02-14-2004, 02:54 PM I would have to go with 2001 and the original Solaris from 1972.
Solaris is fascinating and 2001 has always been a favorite- the book is great too.
Janice 02-14-2004, 03:03 PM My second favorite movie is, The Remains of the Day, (Goodfellas is #1), starring Emma Thompson and my second favorite actor, Anthony Hopkins (Bobby D is #1).
The movie is as slow as molasses, but I adore it. It's a sad and poignant film. It's one of the few movies that I own.
And Dlemond, you're my second favorite member here (myself being #1). ;)

Oh that's sweet Janice.
BUT,
I don't think I could ever bring myself to watch Remains of the Day.
My old roomate and good friend used to give new monickers to movies that were, as Jude Law said to Matt Damon in The Talented Mr. Ripley, "quite boring" (of course Jude had his head bashed in soon after that).
Remains of the Snooze
I Slept Right Through It (that was mine)
Meet Joe Nap
There are others.
Can't think of them right now.
LucyCompanyPhan 02-14-2004, 03:39 PM Oh i Hated Solaris.
I liked the Majestic while everyone else thought it was boring.
LucyCompanyPhan 02-14-2004, 03:40 PM ignore this post.

I was talking about the original.

I was talking about the original.
Though the 1972 was better received, it's worth looking at the Clooney one simply because the director was so obviously influenced by the work of Alain Resnais (L'annee derniere a Marienbad specifically). It's an homage to the most important achievement in the representation of memory in film.
That being said, I'm going to make the incredibly obvious choice and say Gone with the Wind, the slow moving qualification being satisfied by the fact that the movie was so very long. . .
I would include "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly" in my list of choices.
Although it's a western and has some action, it's not really a wall to wall action picture by today's standards.
It's really long, but highly entertaining.
vashti1999 02-15-2004, 03:17 AM Running On Empty, it's definitely light on the action, very quiet, but it's a favorite of mine, one reason being River Phoenix's Oscar nominated performance.
Janice 02-15-2004, 03:51 AM A few more slow moving films that I loved are High Noon (that suspense does build), Tree's Lounge, The Good Girl, Punch-Drunk Love, You Can Count On Me, Open Range, and Unfaithful.
Brad Russ 02-15-2004, 05:45 AM Bridges Of Madison County, With Honors, A Family Thing, and The Straight Story.
LucyCompanyPhan 02-15-2004, 01:16 PM i was talking about the remake, but i don't think i would like the orginal either.

You Can Count On Me is an excellent movie.
I also recommend Ulee's Gold.
Peter Fonda is fantastic in an incredible understated performance.
And as far as the original Solaris goes, it is a lot longer than the remake and painstakingly poetic in its message.
Pretty long and boring for most folks to take, but when I caught it in the right mood I was seriously impressed.
HuntingtonM15 02-15-2004, 04:20 PM In the Bedroom is a pretty slow movie, but I love it.
All of the British costume dramas that I love but no one will watch with me: Howards End, Wings of the Dove, Remains of the Day, Portrait of a Lady, and A Room With a View.
Some of the 'epics' are very hard to sit through, but are definately worth it: Lawrence of Arabia, Ben-Hur, etc. And I did like The English Patient, although I know if I have to sit through it again it will become painful. ;)

Believe it or not, the original Solaris was edited from 200 minutes to 172 minutes. Just thought you'd be interested in that if you thought 172 minutes was long. The 200 minute (director's cut) version is available on an all region DVD from Ruscico (http://www.ruscico.com/) Home Video. However, it's only availabe in Eastern Europe. You'll have to hunt around for it on the internet if you want a copy. :)

Yes I've seen that version on ebay and I do have an all region player that plays PAL as well.
I just bought the Criterion version, and I think they include the deleted scenes (i haven't opened it yet). And I think this version is actually longer than the Rustico one.
There is a great comparison here:

Another slow moving epic...
"Once Upon A Time In America"
by Michael "I love long movies" Cimino.
