I went on idolforums today, and they found something very interesting.

Before January 19 (A13 premiere), i read somewhere, forgot where, that there would be 36 contestants in the semi-finals.

However, at the end of the last episode, they said that there would only be 32.

Buuuut... look at this. There are 36 people in this picture, but only 32 profiles on American Idol's official page. I wonder what they're going to do, since its 4 groups of 8. :confused:

Apparently there was supposed to be a top 36. However, they decided later to have four alternates. If any dirt is dug up anyone, they will replace them in the semi-final round. I've also heard that these four people will automatically be at the Wild Card show. This thread discusses them in depth and even has pics of them all:

Hmm if they're gonna be in the wildcard automatically, thats gonna kinda suck cuz it will give less of a chance for other people to come back for the wildcard show (ex. Katie Webber, Nicole Tieri, Sarah Silva), since 4 slots would be filled right there... but at the same time, its nice that they get to be in the wildcard, since they just have to play "backup" during the semifinals.
