View Full Version : Why you hate certain sitcoms...
LucyCompanyPhan 02-08-2004, 01:52 AM I'm just wondering why people hate certain sitcoms and I'd like real reasons to back up your statement unlike 'annoying or overrated or horrible' Just what about the show or characters you don't like. Feel free to comment about what I said.
Heres a show I hate:
King of the Hill
I always found the characters to be a really unfunny family. Such as, Hank is too dry as a person. Nothing ever interesting ever happened to him. I think all the characters are dry and bland too. Bobby is an outcast of a kid. I never found this show interesting and funny mainly because it was always so boring. It just never kept my attention. Plus I always thought it was way too dramatic. I think the real reason I never liked this show was because it didn't seem fun to me.
Everybody Loves Raymond
This is one show that sticks out to me as something as soon as I heard somebody talk, I had to turn it off. I found the material to be not very clever or original. Maybe it was the certain episodes, but to have lasted so long I don't understand it. To me, there are alot funnier family sitcoms. Raymond himself I think centers himself as too much of a star of the show as a character. I never understood the characters and I never found anything special about it.
Gillians Island
While I never hated or disliked this show, I'm not what you call a fan. I watched it alot of times and I've seen probably most of the episodes but I always found every episode to be the same. I just thought nothing new ever happened on the island. I guess I would call it a guilty pleasure more than a good show. Its just alot of other sitcoms have the same humor and jokes and they are done better. I just think after seeing one episode, you've seen them all.
Family Guy
The same with Gillians Island. I never hated or disliked this show but not a big fan, but why is this show so popular all of a sudden. I know it was canceled and theres talk of bringing it back and I'm not gonna protest but why this show? There are other shows that I liked better that shouldn't of been canceled and brought back. Futuramra was a great show. I thought it was very well done and alot better than Family Guy, so I think its over looked because of Family Guy. I always thought Family guy was a mix of the two. The talking dog and the baby were sort of like a maggie. I mean, they are nothing alike but yet I always think of it as a stolen idea from Futurama and Simpsons and I don't know why. Same with the dumb husband and smart wife. And the 2 kids with the simpsons. Its nothing I haven't seen and its been done better before.
Now I'm just wondering what you have to say with the shows you don't like. I've heard some comments about disliking Scrubs, brady bunch, and especially friends and I was just wondering why you don't like them and what you have to say to back them up.

Ill admit, the early seasons are funny. But Im not a fan of the show, mainly because the on-again, off-again relationships between everybody on the show. It seems more like the show is focused on "will-they-wont-they" rather than comedy. Some things on Friends just gets too dramatic for a sitcom.
Everybody Loves Raymond
Raymond and the wife annoy me, I mean -- I can watch my OWN parents fight, and I find there fights very boring.
A show centered around Doris Roberts and her husband.... now Id watch that.
barwars 02-08-2004, 10:32 AM I agree about King of the Hill -- its not funny.
And when it comes to TV, its either funny or nothing IMO.
barwars 02-08-2004, 11:38 AM M*A*S*H
When I was younger I would've said "because EVERYTHING is green". Well, that still agravates me. But I could never find this show funny. No matter how many times Ive watched it (too many), I never found myself laughing.
ClassicComedyFan2 02-08-2004, 12:03 PM Friends
Totally filled to the gills with sexual humor. Not only that, this supposed "sitcom" focuses on relationships too much and thus ends up being soap-opera like and not very funny at all. And, when the show actually tries to be humorous, the humor is uninspired and thus, unamusing.
Everybody Loves Raymond
The humor is too tame. None of the jokes are over-the-top enough and the acting is way too low-key. Plus, the concept is just...boring.
Roseanne
Just too crass for my tastes. Was another one of those shows that took serious issues and made them serious. It is possible to take serious issues and make them humorous. Also, the show was never unrealistic enough for my tastes.
MASH
Unlike the hilarious Hogan's Heroes, MASH was a war comedy that didn't have over-the-top or tounge-in-cheek acting. It also didn't have any humor after a certain point in the show.
Scrubs, Malcolm in the Middle, Oliver Beene, etc.
I can't STAND live-action sitcoms without laugh tracks or live audiences. I can deal with the lack of it in movies and cartoons, but sitcoms? No dice.

I can understand why some people wouldn't like that in sitcoms saying theres 'too much' but I think a little drama is good for a sitcom because you actually care about the characters and things happen to them. With the brady bunch or gillians island there was never a big change that gave the characters emotion, it was just the same big happy episode over and over....Some sitcoms get to dramaticy but I think drama is good for a sitcom considering it shows the characters are more 3D like than 2D.
I totally agree with you on everybody loves raymond
Friends
Tired of everyone saying that it is the best show and that everyone is talking about it. It's too trendy for me and the characters are all obnoxious. It seems as though everytime a character says something, they have to act as if the audience is supposed to be surprised.

watch the last season next time it comes on Nick At Nite, the last season is the most hated year, because a lot of fans felt betrayed when the Connors won the lottery because it became too far-fetched and unrealistic, when Roseanne's popularity came from the fact that it wasn't sugarcoated and was a realistic depiction of a working class family (as opposed to something like Cosby where the kids were perfect and the parents had no flaws, etc..)
I disagree with the laugh track, I think laugh tracks are sometimes too overbearing. My dad even points out on some shows "oh, they're trying to tell you where you're supposed to laugh". I think sitcoms like Scrubs and Arrested Development succeed by not using a laugh track, they know the audience is smart enough to know what parts are funny and what's not, they don't look down on the viewer as an "idiot".

still, better to talk about Friends than a crappy show like American Idol, I usually leave the room if I hear people talking about AI, IT SUCKS!!!

I love Family Guy just as much as Futurama, but Family Guy is being brought back because of the really strong DVD sales and the fact that it's cheap to produce, unlike Futurama. If you compare some of the animation of Family Guy to the ones in Futurama, there's a tremendous difference.
David 02-08-2004, 08:43 PM Roseanne
It's too "disfunctional" for me. Roseanne's voice really annoys me. Really, i cant stand it... And i dont know. I just dont like this show.

still, that doesn't mean its any more worthy to brought back than futurama because its cheaper. I'm willing to bet that if its brought back, unless its given a good time slot than it won't make it another season. Sometimes I really hate fox. I don't get it. They put like 7 different shows in the sunday night time slot and like switch schedules around all the time. And then they invent the dumbest reality shows and aire them obsessively. bothers me so much.
GoldenFamilyTies 02-08-2004, 10:28 PM Everbody Hates Raymond - The first thing that turned me off about this show was it's title. EVERYBODY Loves Raymond? Ummm.... no. So then I watched a couple episodes and Ray's humor is just annoying to me, and like someone else mentioned, the concept is pretty boring... but sometimes boring plain concepts can turn into great shows.... well, this one doesn't do it for me.

Which is a good reason Futurama: The Movie should happen. :D
Mr. Television 02-08-2004, 11:35 PM As much as I don't like Friends, its 100% better than reality tv.
Friends--Gratuitous sex talk and saying OMG ever two seconds is all the show amounts to IMO. Also, the fact that everyone talks about how hip the show is, I hate it when shows are too "hip" for their own good. And then there's all the people imitating Rachel's hair--it is EXACTLY like Howard Beal said in the movie "Network." That movie propesized today's state of media and entertainment and it's impact on society perfectly.
Rachel isn't real, she's just a character. WAKE UP!!!
I went overboard in the previous post, my apologies. "Friends" is just not my cup of tea, but it may really be a great show. I didn't mean to attack people for their preferences, I was just trying to illustrate the bigger issue of entertainment's impact on society. Once again, sorry.

I understand. but its not just friends that illustrate that entertainment impact on society, its all sorts of people and trends. Alot of sitcoms do that or anything in entertainment. Thats what happens when something gets popular. Its just like a type of music...then people want to be the musicans and you know.

Not funny, the characters are annoying...
MASH
Why the hell is funny about war to begin with...
Ant-Lox 03-03-2004, 05:29 AM Friends
I liked the older episodes because they were funny and now it seems like everyone is in love with each other.
EVERY ABC SITCOM
abc just sucks
Everybody Loves Raymond
I used to like the show but as I watched more and more, i realised that they will never do anything but argue, and raymond has that stupid nasal voice, he's just anoying.
the Simpsons
I love this show, but currently it's sad. Every episode looks like its on drugs, it just moves to fast and makes no sense.

Well look at me now, a full-fledged fan that owns the first 2 seasons on DVD.
Times change.... great TV doesnt.... opinions do.

Fran Drescher's voice annoys me to the point of the show being unwatchable. I used to watch it back when it originally aired, but cant bear it now.
EmoJoe 07-19-2004, 08:56 PM Cheers
Its not funny and its just stupid. The jokes arent funny at all.
Roseanne
Its so dull, the actors are dull, the writing is dull, the SHOW is dull.

spunkygirl 07-19-2004, 09:09 PM Seinfeld: can't watch it, cause I just hate characters that are mean, and these characters put the word mean on the map!!!! The only tolerable character on Seinfeld is Kramer.
The Cosby Show: They are too perfect, no family is that perfect, and Cliff is such a whimp for a main character
LucyCompanyPhan 07-19-2004, 11:55 PM The thing about Friends that I noticed alot of people don't like is that they are too much into relationships and dramatic feelings, but thats one thing I really love about this sitcom. I mean, we have allllll kinds of prefect family with natural love & its like one episode and everything is okay and prefect. While Friends, they actually had to find love and work at it. I mean, most sitcoms are just about being funny and thats good, but it shouldn't always be like that. I think its stupid to not like a show because it has 'heart'. I'm just saying that its nice to have a sitcom where relationships grow & change rather than having it already there and fixing it. I didn't see anyone on the Cosby show or Full House or Three's Company NOT in love with each other. Friends may not be real but it had emotion. It is possible to laugh and cry in the same show. Thats a good thing. Boy Meets World had emotion in it but I don't hear people complain about that, so why Friends?
db108108 07-20-2004, 12:21 AM The writing is dull on Roseanne? Please.... Some episodes are flawlessly written and simply amazing.
I don't really hate any show so much that I absolutely would not watch it. Any show can have its charms, I even see the charms in "According to Jim," but it's not my cup of tea.
I'm also finding on these boards that if you're a sitcom fan, you're also devotely anti-reality. It's wrong to write off an entire genre like that, it's the same as saying that all dramas are crap. There are those blunt grab all the viewers you can reality shows like "American Idol" and "Joe Millionaire" (although I love AI), but there are also more subtle ones like The Amazing Race, one episode of which is enough to convert any non-fan.
Myself, I used to watch purely sitcoms, but, with the exception of a few, they bore me now. I watch a few reality shows as well,
but I find this time of the year, the best thing to do is to turn off the tv and get outside. Nothing on tv can replace lying on a hammock in the back yard watch my pekingese play with rocks. It sounds simple, but it's true.

I loved Boy Meets World, especially the later years when they were in college, mainly because it did have more emotion in it. But I think the reason why people complain about Friends but not about Boy Meets World is because BMW was never as big a hit as Friends. More viewers = more exposure = more complaints.
Chocoholic 07-20-2004, 01:02 PM Friends- To me, this show just is not funny. I can't stand the characters. They rely too much on sexual humor and stuff like that. I never will understand the popularity of this show.

Three's Company- More stupid people. Plus it's got too much slapstick in it, and I no longer find slapstick funny.
