Day 1, Episode 1: Vint and the Kids Move In

Mama rushes her younger sister, Fran, to finish eating so they can get to a sale at the mall. Fran's boss calls, so Fran must go down to her workplace, which is for a newspaper, and re-edit her stories. Thelma is upset because she can't drive and has no way to get to the sale. Vinton, Thelma's only son, drops by the house and announces that he has lost his home and is hoping that he, his daughter Sonja, and his son Buzz, can stay with Mama until he gets back on his feet. Mama allows it to happen. Vint gets the basement, Buzz gets the attic, and Sonja gets Fran's writing studio because she refuses to sleep on the couch. Fran is outraged by this and is even more upset when Sonja stumbles upon Fran's book that she is working on because it is an invasion of her privacy. Thelma had no idea that Fran was actually writing in her studio. Fran made a decision of moving out because she couldn't take it anymore but then changes her mind and decides to stay after all.

Not a very memorable episode. Its kind of different than the rest of the series but it still works since its the first episode. It showed how unreasonable Fran can be and though I always hated Buzz and Sonja, they weren't too bad in this episodes. I don't remember any funny jokes from this episode though. B

The realism is what's so funny to me, though...Mama in particular is superb. I think Sonja's real potential started to come when she got her "makeover" later on---shortly before the cancellation! Too bad.

By the way, this exchange:

Fran: (melodramatic): "Goodbyyye!"
Mama: (dead-pan): "Goodbye."

is priceless!

Day 2, Episode 2: For Better or For Worse

Vinton and Naomi are reunited after many years of not seeing each other since high school. He and Naomi because quite close and Vint tells her that he had a big crush on her in high school. After coming home from the Bigger Jigger, Naomi and Vint go down to the basement to look at Vint's collection of TV Guides. Naomi remarks on how cute Mr. Ed is because that was her favourite show. They end up sleeping together and the next day when Mama and Fran are in the kitchen, Naomi attempts to sneak out and is seen by Mama. She goes into an uproar and is raged at Vint. Later, Naomi asks Vint to come with her to Arizona to run a trailer park because the job wants a husband and wife. Naomi and just previously sold her house, which was right next door to Mama. Vint agrees and lets everyone know that he and Naomi plan on getting married and moving to Arizona. Mama is so shocked that she tells them that they can have the wedding at her house.

I thought this episode was actually pretty funny compared to the rest of season 1's bland episodes. I thought they rushed into the wedding thing a little bit, however. A-.

I remember one episode where Aunt Fran had to write for a dear meg type job for the paper and people wrote their problems to her and she had to give and answer, and one person wrote I have 8 cats and a boyfriend and he hates my cats what should I do pick him or my cats. Sonja says eww gross wall to wall kitty litter. Pick the man she said. That is where momma gave all the advice, and Buzz said you know Grandma since your giving Aunt Fran the advice you should be entilted to some of the profits.
