hawaii five-o 02-06-2004, 04:16 PM Simularities:
Both were on ABC on Friday nights in the 70's.
Both families had three sons.
Both families formed a bubblegum band.
Both mothers were widowed. (Or was Carol divorced??? We'll never know.)
Differences:
The Bradys had three girls. The Partridges only two.
Mrs. Brady remarried. Mrs. Partridge didn't.
The Partridges cracked the Nielsen top 20. The Bradys never did.
The Bradys had a housekeeper. The Partridges had Reuben.

I don't think Brady Bunch cracked the top 50.
Dilly 02-07-2004, 05:37 PM I never liked the Partridge Family. It didn't have the charm that Brady Bunch did. The Partridges weren't really polished and were a bit rough around the edges. I guess it's just preference because some people like one but not the other.

It ranked #31 during the 1971-72 season.
CCRYDER1968 02-22-2004, 10:42 AM I never knew the Brady Bunch wasn't in the top 20! This suprises me considering the huge fan base!

More similiarities:
Viewers never learned the first name of the departed father of either family nor did any relatives from that branch of the family make any appearances.
Both families wore matching costumes when performing.
Both families never had problems finding parking spaces for their rather large vehicles.
More differences:
All six Bradys kids had the same bodies they started out with throughout the show's run.
4 of 5 of the Partridge kids did, too, but Chris had a body switch between Seasons One and Two.
Bradys had a male dog named Tiger (who soon disappeared).
Partridges had a female dog named Simone (who also soon disappeared).
Despite seeming to have fewer liquid assets than the Bradys, the Partridges appeared to have a larger house and each child had more personal space in the house.
Carol always deferred to Mike for important decisions affecting everyone while the Partridges decided everything together with Shirley but with her rulings being final.
All the Brady sons and daughters had the same hair color as their same gendered parent (except for Bobby in the 2nd half of the series who inexplicably reverted to his natural red hair).
Neither of Shirley Partridge's daughters inheritted her blonde hair color but her youngest son Chris (#2) did. It's unknown what the late Mr. Partridge's hair color was yet considering that Keith and Laurie were brunetts while Danny and Tracey were redheads- it's possible the milkman may have stopped by at least twice.
AtlantaBravesFan29 02-22-2004, 08:56 PM Both The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family were on opposite highly rated shows:
The Brady Bunch was opposite Sanford and Son from 1972-1974.
The Partridge Family was opposite All In The Family on Saturday nights in the 1973-1974 season.
Also, during the last season of The Brady Bunch, they had Cousin Oliver, the last season of The Partridge Family, they had the character played by Ricky Seagall who always sang.

The Brady Bunch is one of those shows that became more popular in syndication than in its original run. Like Leave it to Beaver, The Odd Couple, etc.

Lamont Holmes 03-11-2004, 07:51 PM One similairity is when both shows were on location at King's Island. The Partridges did theirs in the 3rd season, while The Bradys did theirs in the 5th season.
Another similairity is Maureen McCormick and Susan Dey's hairdos.
Their both the same.
The difference is when Chris#2(played by Brian Forster) guest star on "The Brady Bunch". None of the Bradys guest starred on "The Partridge Family"
Another difference is the theme songs and opening credits. For "The Brady Bunch",the opening was a "Hollywood Squares" type that changed season by season(except the 2nd and 3rd seasons). The theme was sung by the Peppermint Trolley Company, and later sung by The Brady kids.
"The Partridge Family" only had partridges for its opening. They had 2 versions of the theme song: "When We're Singing" by Wes Farrell & Diane Hilderbrand, and "Come On,Get Happy" with new lyrics by songwriter Danny Janseen.
Why is that?
Lamont Holmes 05-21-2004, 07:49 AM The only reason the 2 theme songs sound a lot alike is because
Wes Farrell did the music for both. Diane Hilderbrand,a session lyric writer who did The Monkees written the 1st seasons lyrics.
Danny Janseen, who would later be famous for writing songs for
"Scooby-Doo","Josie & The Pussycats" and his biggest creation
"Sigmund & The Sea Monsters" written the 2nd seasons lyrics.
NOW THAT'S CREEPY!
Tweety 05-25-2004, 12:20 AM One big difference...
All of the kids on the Brady Bunch were very memorable in their own way...the show was a vehicle for all of the kids, and they were each given their own "episodes", of which they'd be the star... I don't know if the "star" billing was evenly divided, but each kid was featured on several episodes per season..
I never watched the Partridge Family, but it seems to me that the youngest boy and the youngest girl on the Partridge Family were all but useless...
hawaii five-o 05-25-2004, 02:05 PM Chris and Tracy were useful. After all, someone had to play the drums and tambourine.
TV Guy 05-25-2004, 05:05 PM And there were times when Tracy managed to cover for some of the bad lip-synching with her incredble tambourine work. She was right up there with Davy Jones! She was also aces on the triangle.
Tweety 05-25-2004, 05:53 PM Man, oh man...
I DEFINITELY stand corrected!!! Thanks for straightening me out on that, folks...
If you look at the time I posted that comment (I'm in the Eastern time zone), I'm sure you'll understand that I was probably delirious from lack of sleep, which made me hallucinate, which made me think that those two kids were useless...I don't know WHAT I was thinking... and I swear I wasn't under the influence of ANYTHING when I wrote that...
Thanks again...I'll NEVER again make the mistake of thinking that Chris and Tracy were of little or no use...
Steve's Roadhouse 07-05-2004, 07:51 PM As mentioned, all 6 Brady kids had equal billing, each featuring in different episodes. The only pre-teen kid (at least in the beginning) featured in the Partridge Family was Danny, who was the head joke teller on the show. Danny Bonaduce was probably a better child actor than any of the Brady Kids. I have more of a nostalgic fondness for the Bradys, which I saw more often (though I think I saw the Partridge Family first). I do think that the Partridge Family is probably a funnier show overall though.
Spats 02-16-2005, 10:49 PM I always prefered The Partridge Family. It had a more realistic tone. It was hipper. Had good music. The Brady Bunch was like the Twilight Zone. Nobody acted like the Brady kids. I can see why the kids wanted to make some changes and make things more realistic. Like did the Brady's ever go to rock concerts? Kieth Partridge had a Jimi Hendrix poster on his wall. The Brady's had flowers. Back in those days teens were into Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin and acts like that. Who did Marcia like? Davey Jones !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ugh.
cootiebug 02-17-2005, 02:16 PM Barry Williams was a natural as Greg Brady. He was one of the better actors on the show next to Robert Reed of course. I have watched both the Partridge family and the Brady Bunch. The bradys have more of a nostalgic following than the partridge family. I myself enjoy watching the bradys more in syndication.
leroykevin 05-17-2005, 10:09 PM Also, during the last season of The Brady Bunch, they had Cousin Oliver, the last season of The Partridge Family, they had the character played by Ricky Seagall who always sang.[/QUOTE]
And they both were as annoying as @#$%^ :smash: :smash:
TV Guy 05-18-2005, 06:32 PM Also, during the last season of The Brady Bunch, they had Cousin Oliver, the last season of The Partridge Family, they had the character played by Ricky Seagall who always sang.
And they both were as annoying as @#$%^ :smash: :smash:
As much as I dislike Oliver, Ricky Seagall was far, far worse. At least Robbie Rist could deliver a line -- Ricky was so forced and so supremely untalented. And those horrible songs -- "You look like you need some cheering up!". Ugh. I'm surprised David Cassidy agreed to appear in those scenes; they are truly embarrassing. Ricky is the anti-Christ.
That said, I do think quality-wise, the Partridges were a cut above the Bradys. But the Bradys have obviously have had more staying power.
Plbrown046 05-29-2005, 04:55 PM Chris and Tracy were useful. After all, someone had to play the drums and tambourine.
LOL
jehobden 06-13-2005, 07:05 PM It ranked #31 during the 1971-72 season.
Where did you get that information? I'd love to see complete tv ratings for shows back 20-30 or more years ago, if they exist, to see how high such shows as Leave It to Beaver actually ranked when they didn't make the top 30. Fortunately newer editions of The Complete Directory of Prime-Time Network TV Shows (Brooks & Marsh) have ratings for the top 30 for every season now, so I noticed there that while I Dream of Jeannie never got into the top 25, it did make the top 30 in 1965-66 & 1968-69.
Tweety 06-13-2005, 08:37 PM ...The Brady Bunch was like the Twilight Zone. Nobody acted like the Brady kids. I can see why the kids wanted to make some changes and make things more realistic. I agree that Davey Jones sucked as a solo artist...I grant you that ("Girl" is one of the worst performances I've ever heard any solo artist do... was that an actual record of Davy's? I lived thru that time and I thought the Monkees were ok, but i don't remember ever hearing "Girl" on the radio, other than when he did it on the Brady Bunch)
But to answer the question about whether the Bradys ever went to a rock concert... don't you remember? When Greg was told he couldn't drive the Brady's car for a week, he borrowed someone else's car to go get tickets to the "rock concert"... and I believe he actually ended up going to the concert. And Greg himself was in a band ("Clowns never laughed before, and beanstalks never grew... Ponies never RRRRAN before, till I met you"...). Not to mention Johnny Bravo! Greg was a mega-rock star himself, he didn't HAVE to GO to concerts... He bent the gig outta shape himself!!! He wasn't just IN the top 20, he WAS the top 20...
Keith was a wuss.

A few more differences:
The Brady kids actually sang on their show (only David Cassidy, already an adult, and Shirley Jones sang on The Partridge Family
Cindy never appears topless, but Tracy did!
Corporal punishment was only mentioned in passing on Brady Bunch but actually occurs (albeit off camera) on The Partridge Family.
Brady Bunch never mentions the hometown but The Partridge Family mentions it numerous times "San Pueblo".
Probably the biggest difference is that Brady Bunch had numerous reunion shows but The Partridge Family had none, only cast get togethers!
Jude The Obscure 06-08-2008, 01:42 AM Wrong--The Partridge Family had a reunion show in 1976 along with the cast of My Three Sons, aired on ABC.
And to answer Tweety's question, yes, "Girl" was an actual Davy Jones single--it was from the movie "Star Spangled Girl" with Sandy Duncan and Todd Susman.

When you say they had a reunion show in 1976 are you talking about a real reunion show where they are in character or are you talking about a special where the cast just talks about the show?
The latter doesn't count and if it is the former, how did the partridge family and the characters from My 3 sons get on the same show?
Jude The Obscure 06-08-2008, 02:47 AM By reunion--yes, the cast gets together to talk about the show. And don't ask me why it was My Three Sons....ABC put it together and prolly it was cheaper to pull off?

So it wasn't a real reuinion in that it was not a continuation of the plot of the show, just cast memebers talking about the show. David Cassidy was David Cassidy, he wasn't Keith.
That's really just a series of interviews with cast members, except that they have all or most of the cast members involved.
Jude The Obscure 06-08-2008, 10:29 AM It is still considered to be a reunion. Just like "Still Brady after all these years" was a reunion.
sixfingers 06-08-2008, 11:39 AM That wsn't a reunion show. A real reunion show is a continuation of the plot where the actors appear as the charcters they played.
Ireneparalegal 06-08-2008, 11:35 PM Why does ^^^^ sound so much like Solomon arguing that Good Times is not a spin-off?
It was a reunion, plain and simple.
BTW, having watched PULP FICTION, the Vince character is asked BRADY BUNCH or PARTRIDGE FAMILY? He chooses Partridge Family. ;)
sixfingers 03-28-2010, 09:32 PM More similiarities:

...
That's because Shirley just ignored regulations in parking lots. In at least one episode she is shown driving the bus the wrong way against a clearly marked arrow!
