View Full Version : Black History Month
InspectorExstead 02-04-2004, 02:27 AM I was flipping through the channels and heard something, I think on NickNews, that made me wonder.
February is Black History Month...a month dedicated to the celebration of blacks and their achievements. Many films about extraordinary blacks are shown on TV. But how far have we really come? There aren't many days, outside of February, that these achievements or people are talked about. Not that many movies concerning these achievements are shown outside of February. What do you think?
Eddie Haskell 02-04-2004, 03:00 AM I think if we ever had a White History Month there would be riots in the street.
Not trying to offend anyone but I never understood Black History Month or the Black Miss America pageant.
dawsongirl 02-04-2004, 03:06 AM And why don't they have a history month for all sorts of races and ethnicities? Just a random thought.

If a black woman was told they could not participate in Miss America, they would be screamed at for racial discrimination. But can Black Miss America tell a white woman she cannot compete?
Jenya 02-04-2004, 09:47 AM This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide. More than 800,000 Rwandans were brutally murdered in 1994. I would like to know if there will be any memorial services or candlelight vigils dedicated to this terrible tragedy during Black History Month.
For some sad reason, I have my doubts. :(

No.
But becoming Miss Black America is not exactly the dream of the average white woman.

There already is....
March = Women's history month (That of course includes white women)
May = Asian History month

In other words....you don't give a sh*t about world African history, right? No wonder most African refugees prefer to choose Canada as a country to rebuild their lives.

Don't tell me what I give a ***** about and what I don't!
I'm posting the facts! Black History Month celebrates the History of blacks in The United States, Not Rwanda! That is a fact!
Now if African Refugees prefer Canada, I'm sure it has much more to do with the more tolerant white population, and Canada's open borders.

I'll tell YOU exactly why they prefer to live in Canada. Because most of these refugees don't want to hear the daily racisim garbage being pumped in their heads. You know, like the simular junk YOU were pumping out in PetMonkey27 (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?s=&threadid=96151&perpage=15&pagenumber=2) 's thread last week. They have seen enough it from their home countries.
I don't have the time or energy to fight with you over this racism garbage (as I'm currently at work). So have fun with your so-called Black History Month. :)
isiahthomas 02-04-2004, 11:56 AM I am Him are u black? I don't know what blacks have black history month for cause most black youth today don't care about black history month & what blacks have achieved. Black youth today are so messed up it's a shame. Blacks that are trying to learn about their heritage, u got the ignorant ones who wanna laugh at u when u are trying to learn something & they mess it up for the ones who are trying to learn. If u were to ask any black youth today who is Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Marian Anderson, George Washington Carver, Frederick Douglass, they couldn't tell u. All they know is Malcolm X & Martin Luther King.

Exactly who would be doing the rioting? I'd love to see a White History Month, stories of everything from how whites brought shiploads of Africans to America to farm plantations for nothing to lynchings of Black people just because they're Black, sure, I wouldn't mind hearing that as a part of a White History Month other than just the usual George Washington and Thomas Jefferson stories. The point of Black History Month is to remind those who don't learn about it in school that Blacks have a powerful, important place in the history of this country, despite the history of oppression the race has faced. Are you saying that you don't understand the Black Miss America pageant but you do understand the mainstream Miss America pageant?? Personally, aside from money for education, I don't understand what purpose any pageant serves.
M82A1 02-04-2004, 01:21 PM I'll bet the people on this thread don't know that the tribes in Africa were the ones that sold the slaves to the British.
The one thing I would like to see in America is a Native American history month! They were treated a LOT worse than the Africans.

Well, it would be racial discrimination. It's Miss America, not Miss White America. America is made up of different races, so one would assume that if that organization wants to honor women representative of America (not White America) then there's no justification to exclude Black women, or anyone else. One can assume by its name that the Black Miss America organization was set up to honor Black women, so what sense would it make for a White woman to have a desire to compete there?
Hollow 02-04-2004, 04:10 PM :grady: is black. i noticed that a few months ago.

I agree...in a way. I think it's because blacks were treated so badly in the past, and I can understand why we have a month dedicated to them...but still, I think we should forget that we're different, and that's just drawing attention to it.

Same with the BET channel. If there was a White Entertainment channel it would be a completely different story. I don't quite understand why there has to be a certain month designated to celebrate a race's history. We should just celebrate every race... not a specific one at a certain time (ewe that's really c0rny :grr: )

What would be a completely different story?? In addition to BET, on my cable system there's the Chinese channel, the Arabic channel, the Greek channel, TV Japan, Korean TV, Latin TV. Should all these channels not exist simply because they'd have more appeal to one particular race? If someone created a White Entertainment channel tomorrow, Blacks wouldn't be up in arms.
°Bubbly Blonde° 02-05-2004, 11:04 PM I dont mind black history month, I think it's just a celebration of black people's achievements. I think the reason we dont have "white history month" is because, well, to a lot of minorities probably, atleast who I have talked to, feel that all that we learn about are white people and what they have done in the United States. And there is no White Entertainment Television because most everyone on tv is white so why would there be a need for a white network? And why did the discussion become whether black history month should exist, it was originally about how far have they come in the United States, and how far do they have to go to reach equality...?

Isn't a lot of those channels you are talking about imports, vashti1999? We get a lot of global channels on our satellite as well. I think there is way too many seperation channels. There are specific channels now geared towards only men, women, gays.....I mean all these seperation channels starting to get ridiculous, if you ask me.

What would happen is one or two blacks would say something against it. Perhaps Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.
After that, the news would read "All Black people are up in arms"
I suppose GW Bush represents the views of all white people.
vashti1999 02-06-2004, 10:48 AM Okay, maybe I was reaching when I used all those other examples, but basically I don't have any problem with different races or groups having things that may appeal exclusively to them, no matter the race. It wouldn't bother me, personally.

I know, it wasn't in response to you. You're right, there are probably people who feel that because Sharpton organizes a march against something that he's the voice speaking for all Blacks, and that's not the case. I meant my original post mentioning other channels may not be comparable in the context of this discussion, but if there were something as specific as a White entertainment channel, I'd say why not. I don't think I'd have a problem with it.
Mrs. Ducky 02-06-2004, 11:36 AM I really don't like the idea of any racial history months. All it does is put more racial discrimination in the world and that sucks! your right..but there is more than one outcome.
1. People appreciate their differences.
2. People hate others because of their differences.
it can only go two ways. to comment on your statement "but if they're going to have their own history"..every culture has its own history. You can start to gather folks from your culture and organize something. :)

If you're Black then ONLY speak for yourself. Alot of Blacks care very much about their history and are very knowledgeble about it. I don't know about everyone else, but where I'm from, we celebrate Black history everyday. Everything here represents African Americans. And personally, I wouldn't care if there was a white entertainment tv, but there is nothing but whites on tv all day, everyday. Sure, u may see a few Blacks, but not many. In history books, all you read about is whites and hispanics. You probably would never find a public school history book with a chapter all about successful Blacks, you probably won't even find a whole page on Black history. BET is not only for Blacks of course, it's just there because the majority of African Americans like rap, jazz, gospel, and R&B, and so does alot of other people although some won't admit it. I'm just stating my opinion, so please don't attack me, I just felt like that needed to be said because only a few people realize the things i do.

isiahthomas 02-10-2004, 05:30 PM JoJoJoJoJo you're trippin. Leave Jesse Jackson alone. The best comedian i've seen talk like Jesse is Jamie Foxx. He be having me rollin sounding like Jesse when he does standup. Sometimes Jesse does be trippin like the time when Cedric The Entertainer talked about him in the Barbershop movie. It was just a movie & Jesse tried to have a protest with Rev. Al Sharpton saying that Cedric shouldn't have talked about him, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks in a bad way. People talk like that all the time in a black barbershop. U gonna protest everytime somebody talk about u? LOL. Cedric had me rollin when he said Rosa Parks ain't special. I have a dislike for Rosa Parks cause she's suing the rap group Outkast right now cause she didn't like the fact that they used her name for their song Rosa Parks without her permission. They didn't even diss her in the song. The song is a celebration about what she did. She probably don't even know who Outkast is. Her grandkids probably told her who they were & they told her oooh grandma Outkast is using your name for a song hahahahahahahahahahaha.

felicitylen 02-10-2004, 06:19 PM Everyone seems to be offended of an all black Miss America Pageant. I must be the only one that hasn't seen it because the only pageant that I have seen comes on every year on, I think CBS or ABC, and the young women who seem to be competing look white to me. Maybe you'll find 1 or 2 blacks but of course they are light skinned.
There are other months that celebrate culture. November is American Indian Heritage Month, May is Asian-American Heritage Month also in May is Cinco de Mayo( I know it's only one day), September is National Hispanic-American Heritage Month.
Hanukkah begins in December, Rosh Hashanah begins in September.
Some cultures may not have full months but they are celebrated within some of the different months. If people would educate themselves, then they wouldn't be so offeneded when it came to February, being Black History month.
isiahthomas 02-11-2004, 06:12 PM Have ya'll seen the casket of Emmitt Till when they showed how his face looked? I've never seen nothin that gruesome in my life. I don't know why blacks are depicted so much as the MOST ignorant race. In college they teach you the full history of people and their up-and-comings. We blacks are sometimes given "special" treatment because, hsitorically we've been given the hardest times in becoming Americans. Topics in which never are discussed in African American history, because everyone likes to shut up and shut out. Though, people need to know.

That story has been out of the spotlight for some time, and one of the worst I've ever heard. A 15 yr.old boy, killed in such a gruesome way. He actually had a nerve problem, and his mother showed him a breathing technique to calm himself down, but the woman accussed him of whistling at her. I get spicy at the mention of that story. I also agree that alot of our people don't know the full story of our history, one of the reasons why we can't progress.
If you don't know your history, you can't have a future.
