View Full Version : THANK YOU Dr. Crane!! "Friends" is NOT the best comedy ever!
barwars 01-31-2004, 09:38 PM LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - After much harrumphing by TV critics and mild criticism from the star of another lauded series, NBC has quit calling "Friends" "the best comedy ever."
The network used the phrase earlier this month in promos for the series, which you've probably heard is wrapping up a 10-season run on NBC in May. The spots were in the don't-miss-the-final-episodes vein, with the superlative tacked on at the end.
The promos were a hot topic at the recently wrapped TV Critics Association press tour, where one reporter asked "Frasier" star Kelsey Grammer, who's also leaving NBC after this season, what he thought of the network labeling "Friends" No. 1.
"I don't blame them for saying that," Grammer said, adding with a smile, "Although we all know that's not true."
The spot also produced a slew of indignantly compiled lists of other great sitcoms, from "I Love Lucy" and "The Honeymooners" to "Cheers" and "Seinfeld."
NBC spokeswoman Rebecca Marks acknowledges that the promo department may have gone a little "overboard" with the "Friends" spot.
"They were just trying to hype it," Marks tells the AP. "It ran once and it won't run again."
barwars 01-31-2004, 09:39 PM all i can say is....
THATS RIGHT BITCH!!
Dean Winchester 01-31-2004, 11:39 PM I personally think while Friends isn't the best sitcom ever (tho I do think it is one of the best from the past decade), neither is Frasier IMO.
GoldenFamilyTies 02-01-2004, 01:51 AM Some people think it's the best sitcom ever... some people think Cheers is the best sitcom ever... some people think The Golden Girls is the best sitcom ever...
It's all opinion.
dawsongirl 02-01-2004, 03:17 AM IMO...it's not even good. It's overhype.
But to get technical...no one should use "Best..." anything, because it's nothing but an opinion.

 If "it's" is in regards to Friends, that's right on the money!
If only NBC had given this kind of publicity to Our House in the mid-late 1980s ...

That was a stupid phrase anyway, How can one particular show be labeled as the Funniest Comedy ever and viewers have different taste. Friends is not funny to me at all. All sitcoms are funny in their own way. No Sitcom is FUNNY to everybody.
Dean Winchester 02-01-2004, 04:20 PM why does everyone hate Friends here?
Okay, I don't exactly think it's on the Lucy/Honeymooners/M*A*S*H level as an all-time classic sitcom, but at the same time, I do think it is one of the best sitcoms of our generation. The show has really declined in recent years, but I don't think any "Friends haters" can really deny that it was really funny at least the first five seasons. I think there are plenty of other shows out there that are more overrated than Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond and The Sopranos come to mind IMO.

Because everyone makes it out to be the damn best sitcom of the 90s and I thinks it's just ordinary. I don't find it funny.

And it made David Schwimmer a star. That man can't act his way out of a paper bag.
Mr. Television 02-01-2004, 06:04 PM I like Seinfeld better than Friends. I think its a matter of choice too. I can think of a lot of great sitcoms but I'd have a hard time picking the one that is the greatest of all time.

I'm just glad this season is the end of Friends.

Literally.
Too many people have.
I think its a great show.
And it deserves all the attention it gets (and more)
About a show being "best".... I dont think there is any that fits that category -- without being strictly opinion.
However.... I dont believe I know anyone who DOESNT like "I Love Lucy"
And if they dont like it.... Im pretty sure there is not one tv show which everyone likes.

And i also think its one of the best sitcoms. Its hilarious, and has an amazing cast.
barwars 02-01-2004, 08:27 PM Ok.... then its decided.... there is no show EVERYONE likes.

He was far better as Karen's boyfriend (and husband) on The Wonder Years, a REAL classic IMHO. props:

Finally, some one else who knows David can't act. He is dull and very annoying on Friends. He's one thing I wont miss about Friends when it ends.

I try to forgive the Schwimmer thing. I had been a fan of Cox since her days on Family Ties and also loved her in a lot of her film work in the early 90's and she was why I started watching Friends in the first place, so I will eternally be grateful that Friends made her an A-list star. Same with Aniston and Kudrow.
Schwimmer is the Friend who could've gotten killed off in season 3, and would not have hurt the show at all. He NEVER recovered after the "we were on a break!" stuff in season 3, and he doesn't quite have the boyish geek charm he had in the early seasons anymore.
Artfiore1 02-05-2004, 02:18 PM Hi all,
Growing up in the 1960s & '70s, I became accustomed to looking forward to a specific night of the week and enthusiastically thinking *"My show" is on tonight!* I can honestly say that it's been years since I've felt that way about any sitcom. These days, there is no sitcom I really like a lot. The only show I love and watch regularly these days, while amusing at times, is technically a crime drama. There are a handful of current sitcoms which I can *tolerate*, but am not really crazy about. "Friends" happens to be one of them. In my opinion, for what my opinion is worth, it's FAR from the "best comedy ever." I like the pace of the dialogue. I like Ross and Chandler, I love Joey and Phoebe, I could take or leave Monica, and I despise Rachel.
I suspect that, unfortunately, if it were possible to combine the talents of all you David Schwimmer bashers, it most likely wouldn't add up to one-half of a David Schwimmer. Like most critics, chances are, you're all talentless, soulless and pretty worthless.
Later,
Art

I agree wholeheartedly. I think the whole "let's bash Friends" thing is just part of the whole "I'm so cool because I don't like what's popular".
Friends admittedly is NOT the classic that Lucy or Seinfeld is, but it is still eons above 95% of the stuff passing as "comedy" on television today IMO. I am willing to bet in 2025, Friends will be as well-loved on Sitcoms Online as Happy Days, Three's Company and The Facts Of Life are today. It is like those shows in terms that it has aged well (I think enough time has passed since season 1 that we can say it has... season 1 is just as funny now as it was a decade ago)

David Schwimmer is a crappy actor. He is annoying, idiotic, and boring. He's not funny. Also, I am sure everyone can act a hell of a lot better than David.

THANK YOU! Well said! I bet if half of the bashers here had to get up on stage and try to be funny one cue, or cry one cue, etc... they couldn't do it.

It's weird that everyone else in Friends can act great, but not David. What's David's excuse for acting so stupid? :grr:
I hate "Friends" and I've acted my way out of soooooo many tests at school. "I don't feel so good....*grabs head* my head HUUUUUURTS!!! TURN THE LIGHTS OFF! I HAVE A MIGRANE!!!"
