recently got some junk vcds, three episodes per disc.

about 15 seconds into the theme song all the discs freeze up.
vcd's from detective griffin play fine, and from evryone else also.

wont say who they are from, but the person wont redo them on tapes or anything.got good sp stuff from me.

Sounds to me like the person making these did it wrong.

anyway these can be redone properly???

I have a jvc dvd/vcd player with progressive scan,loaded.

any thoughts,is this something on my end??

sounds to me more like error in the person who made them,I know they are not gonna redo them, and they are getting my tapes today,if I cant fix these Im ripped off again.

I broke my own rule this person contacted me for the trade, and I never traded from them, but I didnt make them wait till I got my stuff.

isnt 3 shows on vcd the same as ep, not sp speed??

Just seems to me they should be one episode per disc, like all my 100 other vcd's are, although 21 jumpstreet without commercials runs longer then a half hour sitcom.

Very dissappointed:(

Hi M.
I cant promise you they can be redone properly, but its possible. If you send me a few of them (3 or 4), let me play around with them and see if theres anything I can do with the files.
Maybe they can extracted and reburned. Very weird, man.

When/ if you do, send me instructions about what you want - how many eps per disc or whatever, sos that I dont forget whats going down.

ps .....

if this is a sitcom w/o commercials, ea. ep is probably 22 minutes or so? 3 eps per cd is standard. There really is no ep speed or sp speed. a super vcd would hold shorter length of footage at a better quality often, but many cannot make or play them.

if my computer were 2x faster, id be able to make excellent ones.

3 eps per disc... Na I wouldnt call those sp mode vcds. I have vcds with 7 -10 eps per disc that are excellent quality .

D.G is right. You can save the files to your hard drive then reburn to different discs. Had a few discs do that before . The mpeg files were ok but the disc werent . After reburned to better brand cd r they were fine.
Must have been one hell of a trader for you to break your rule.

yeah my player plays vcd or super vcd.even lights mpeg2 etc..

just some rookie didnt know what they were doing.

I have had movies on vcd, always on 3 discs about 40 minutes each, never seen discs run longer then that unless they are crappy avi's or something

I tried copying them but no luck,I used to have tmpg-spelling-
then I could convert them.

It sucks, they got me good,to bad ups man left them on the door,if he would have kept the package and left the slip,I would have got the package back.
From now on if I trade with someone new and they contact me I wont send at the same time.

thanks d.g, I will send you a few,you are the vcd master:D :D

I sent you an email back-I am gonna tape those 2 episodes for you,and whatever else you want from boom:D

  that's pretty funny!!:

"I think im going to end up ziplock bagging my fishies and putting them under the covers with me - lol."

I received some jacked up vcds (4 of them) in a trade recently, and I was hoping there is someway to fix them. I'll try to transfer to better quality media and see if that works! I've emailed the person I received them from and they ignored my emails. Too bad cause they have some good stuff on their website...but..I don't want to get stuck with more junk!! On a good note...I can tell you that I purchased a lot of shows from Pepe and not only is this person ULTRA FASTTTTTTT - (ships out the day after you order it)...I ordered some disks that have to be played on a region free player. They sent me 2 news disks and were incredible nice about it!!

Let every one know how it works. When a cd is messed up for whatever reason, I usually end up extracting the video files from the disc with one program or another (depends on if they'll come off with out a fight - usually its a giant fight) then reburn the vcd from scratch.
one of the biggies i hear about is people pumping stuff out way too fast so they can do more.

I just realized that the 4 I have are dvdrs, not vcds. I can't get anything to read them...even my new external dvd burner/player that reads and writes on just about any format!

How do traders typically resolve these problems? I know if I sent some bad disks, I'd replace them as soon as possible. It's frustrating that 4 I have are screwed up. I guess I'll just have to suck this one up. Since I can get anything to read these, I can't extract any files:o(

Good ettiquette,

thats what any decent trader would do

not this girl, told me a big story about it worked here,,,,blah blah I asked someone this or that...........blah blah.......why should I spend more $$----blah blah.

what a jerk

Sounds like fun Jen,messing with those fighting vcd's:D :D

ARGGHHHHHH!!! Now I've promised out two sets of 15 vcds - and so far out of 5, 2 of them will not copy because of "read error". I will try to save the files to my hard drive and burn from scratch. I also got an error that said something about a "MSDOS error?" Huh???

Mashunter18: I wonder if we got our "junk" from the same person???

One thing you can do to copy a stubborn disc is use clone cd. The thing is, the copy will be exact and also uncopyable.
i dont believe clone cd is distributed anymore but i can be found, im sure. esp. if you have kazaa.

cdmage and iso buster are 2 programs i use to extract the .dat files right back off the disc so i can reburn from scratch. i dont mention them because im not good at describing how to use stuff.
its a lot of playing around, thats for sure. sometimes i extract them with one of those, then still end up mux / demux with tmpgnc just to be sure everything is going right on.

Here's the error message I'm getting: Cannot copy MUSIC02: MS-DOS function.

Any advice on how to overcome this issue?

Thanks!!!

There is no such thing as "speed" when making VCDs. 3 episodes per disc is standard if it's a half hour show (meaning each episode runs about 22-25 minutes per episode without commercials). You cna fit a maximum of 80 minutes of CD-quality audio or VCD-quality video on a 700mb CD. There is no way to encode it so that it uses the full capacity of the disk for one half hour episode, that's not the way it works. You encode the video in VCD-format MPEG-1. There is ONE format of VCD MPEG, and that's it. There's no way to adjust it, beyond using some filters and such during the encoding process to keep the picture as clean as possible. If it's a playback problem, then it could be the VCD was encoded in a format that your player doesn't recognize. The most common format is VCD 2.0 (this is the current standard), although some programs still use the old VCD 1.1 format (whic isn't as widely compatible). Try it out on your computer. Use a variety of player programs. If it still doesn't work after everything
you try, then it's a problem with the VCD. But don't go labelling a 3-episode VCD as "crap," most people would consider that a good deal. Once again, there is NO WAY to encode a VCD so that it uses the full capacity of the disc for a single half hour episode. You're getting the best the format can offer. If anything, be glad you didn't get ripped off with only one episode per disc. For hour-long shows it's standard practice to put only one episode per disc simply because you can't FIT two episodes. That would require a running time of 82 - 94 minutes, depending on the show (current hour long shows run far shorter without ads than shows from years ago). Hope this clears up any confusion.

I dont understand, this thread is pretty fresh,

appreciate the vcd info.

I have 111 vcd's,about 10 I made along time ago on my old computer.

I had a program called tmpeg??something close to that.

I converted avi to vcd and super vcd,and got plenty to play for me,using the templates available to get the right fps etc..When I say play I mean play on my stand alone dvd.

guess I didnt relize you could put that many on a vcd a 700mgb 80 minute cd.

having all these vcd's and never having more then 40 minutes on one, just assummed speed was wrong, now I know.

But I still got junk, cause it freezes after 1-=15 seconds every vcd 15 total.

They wont even play on computers for me,tried 3 different ones, but they will start on my player.
The picture is ok,I can see some of the green blotches that tells me it's vcd.

I will see what Jen says when I send her a few.

Im more dissappointed in the trader not giving a redo, cause im convinced my player can read several formats, well I know for a fact cause it even lights up super vcd or mpeg 2.

Ah, I was looking at the date one of the posters registered, note the date of the actual post. That explains it! :) Well, it definately doesn't sound like your player then. My player is similar, it plays just about anything. I tend to favor VCD over S-VCD because of the more widespread compatibility, although S-VCD definately gives you better quality. The main reason you can't encode a VCD the way you were thinking is basically because of the way the encoding works - VCD uses CBR (Constant Bit Rate), and nothing else. With DVD, you have the choice of CBR or VBR (Variable bit rate), which affects the file size considerably. VBR uses higher compression for low-motion scenes, and lower compression for high-motion scenes. The result is you can fit more on a disc, but at a partial loss of quality. Overall, the results can be quite nice with VBR if done well. If you want consistent quality throughout, you would use CBR set at the highest level (8000 bps, IIRC).
What this means is that you will end up with a much larger file, but the quality will be consistent throughout. This is what is used for the "SP mode" quality DVDs. You can also use CBR at a lower rate to fit more on the disc, but you lose a LOT of quality the more you compress. With VCD, because it uses CBR throughout, your files will always be the same size - it's more dependant on the running time of the file than the level of compression, since the compression is always the same. A half hour show typically takes up about 200 megs of space, so you can easily fit 3 on a disc with some room left over for a menu with background music. I like to pack my VCDs with as much stuff as I can fir to give people the most value for the money. Since the files are always the same size, I figure I might as well pack the discs! :) And I haven't heard any complaints so far... ;)Originally posted by mashunter18 I dont understand, this thread is pretty fresh,

Hope you can get the p[roblem fixed, sounds like whoever did the discs doesn't quite know what they're doing yet. There's a bit of a learning curve, yes, but once you figure out how to do it, you can get quite creative! I know I've had a lot of fun making VCDs, especially with making snazzy looking (and sounding) menus and finding cool extras to throw in. (My Ghost in the Shell set, for example, absolutely ROCKS! Gorgeous quality throughout - I got ultra-high quality .avi files to encode them from, and loaded with extras). Cheers!
