One of my only gripes about Cheers is that they never properly addressed Coach's death. I'm sorry, but Sam telling Woody, "Coach passed away. Hey, want a job!?" is not very satisfying.

I put myself in the writers' shoes a few months ago, though, and tried to write a fan fiction revolving around Coach's death, but I couldn't do it. I have a few pages written, but got stuck.

I absolutely agree. I would've been satisfied with a retrospective show on some of Coach's highlights on the show.

Yea they should have had an episode where the phone rings and Sam answers it and someone tells them Coach dies and they go to the funneral something like that

Diane did kind of get emotional when she was talking to Sam about Coaches death when he went and found her working for the nuns. Other than that and Sam telling Woody about him it was not very eventful. They should have done a show about him getting sick and passing on instead of just a few words about the man. Long Live Coach!!!!!

she puts on this face when Sam makes the joke about the coach always saying how he hoped heaven didn't have a lot of stairs. It's just sad...

Coach is ten times better than Woody.
I think that if I were alive when he had died.... id be speachless.

I'm not sure if I agree with that statement. Certainly, Coach was the original, but I think Woody did a great job filling the void that Coach left. I don't necessarily like one better than the other, though. The two characters are so alike, yet so different.

exactly, it's like saying Diane is better than Rebecca when they really were two completely different characters. You might as well ask Lilith or Diane? Carla or Lilith? Rebecca or Carla?

I take that back.... he may not be ten times better.
But I do prefer Coach over Woody.
And they are definately the easiest characters to compare between.

It makes me feel kinda empty when I watch the episode where you first find out about Coach's death. I mean, it was like...nothing! :o That always bothered me.

But then, if I think about it, I would have been disgusted with a funeral show or an episode centering around his death. One of the greatest things about Cheers is that it never did any "Very Special Episodes." I hate that with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns. ;)

Yeah I agree. They should have done a whole episode about his funeral. All the characters could recall their greatest memories of Coach. Then after the episode aired they could have done a show with the actors talking about their memories of Nicholas Colasanto.

I would have rather had them do a show that fit in with the on going story lines. Not a tribute show. 8 Simple Rules did it when John Ritter died. That episode started with Sam coming back from Europe looking for Diane and then it was 6 months later. They could have done a regular show that fit into the timeline and shown the emotions that everyone was going through with his death. That, to me, would have been tribute enough.

Idk, it's like Ted Danson said on his interview on the Season 2, Coach was the heart and soul of the first couple seasons and he definately deserved something more than just a casual conversation. They could have done like a rememberance or ceremony or something orchestrated by Diane, that certainly could have fit into the show somehow, or they could have done a whole tribute thing like they did for the 200th episode. At any rate let's hope that they'll have something on the Season 3 DVD. I would have liked to see what Ted and Shelley and the rest of the cast thought and heard their memories about Nick Calosanto. Shelley especially I'm sure was crushed, I mean if what True Hollywood Story said was true (which is probably a big if) Nick was her only real friend out of the cast.

Yea, if you see the Tvland ET thing did on Cheers, she's almost in tears when she refers to it.
