View Full Version : Will And Grace, The New I Love Lucy?
SPLAIN 01-26-2004, 03:20 PM In this week's In Touch magazine, the Star Tabloid and even on Oprah last week, everybody is talking about the fact that Will and Grace is the new I love Lucy. AND they keep comparing Debra Messing to Lucy. Well, Debra so looks like Lucy lately and not just because she's pregnant and is glowing. Debra thinks it's one terrific compliment, and the other stars of the show found it to be quite a compliment also to be compared to the greatest sitcom of all time.
Lodee 01-26-2004, 05:56 PM So is Jack supposed to be Fred then??? And who's Ethel? karen?

Karen who?
Lodee 01-26-2004, 09:24 PM Did I get the name wrong? I'm talking about the rich friend who had the maid that Jack married.

LOL! I have no idea since I dont watch the show and the only one by that name around here with that name is me :p
dawsongirl 01-27-2004, 04:37 AM Oh...no way. I don't buy that. And I don't see Debra Messing as the next Lucy.

No, her name is Karen.
Mickey 01-27-2004, 04:48 AM Well maybe, if it was actually funny...! I've given up on the show now. It's be rubbish lately. Think we're on S4 at the moment in the UK (Woody Harrelson has just disappeared, and Grace was just dating an old high school friend in prison?). They're a fine cast, and could be a lot better. ILL need not worry about being superceded. Not with those scripts!
And that E-Bay list is starting to annoy me now!
An article I read last year said Bonnie Hunt was the new Lucille Ball.
I wish they would make up their minds...
;)
crazyredhead 01-27-2004, 08:53 AM No matter what they say, there will never be a new Lucille Ball, or a new I Love Lucy. That's scary.
SPLAIN 01-27-2004, 10:04 AM They're not saying the show is THE NEW I LOVE LUCY, they are just giving it the ultimite compliment, that's the way you have to take it. Debra is extremely good, and gracious enough to take the comparison to Lucy as the ultimite compliment also. Of course you can't compare the characters or anything, but they are both funny shows at the top of the ratings. I still love the show and it is one of the few that still makes me laugh now and then, like Raymond or The Simpsons.

You said before that they were!

Hey Micky, I kind of like that. Sometimes I even click on an item if it looks really interesting.
SPLAIN 01-27-2004, 04:19 PM They're comparing the shows as the ultimate compliment not as . . . ah never mind. LOL!
Lodee 01-27-2004, 04:40 PM Oh I get it. You mean not literally. I thought she did look like Lucy at the Golden Globes. Although I only saw the part with Joan Rivers and her daughter.
Ricardos4ever 01-27-2004, 08:28 PM I've only seen a few episodes of "Will and Grace", couldn't get into it, so I really can't comment on it. I just remember seeing that spread in Entertainment Weekly a looong time ago, and Will and Grace were dressed up as Lucy and Ricky. Kinda cool.
I've also heard Jessica Simpson being compared to Lucy. Not that you can really do that, because Lucy is an actress and Jessica Simpson is herself on a reality show ("The Newlyweds"), but I can see their reasoning. Sometimes Jessica acts ditzy and does ditzy things, and her husband Nick puts up with it, rolls his eyes. Their exchanges really do remind me of Lucy and Ricky sometimes. I love that show. Like Claude was saying earlier on this thread, few shows actually get a laugh out of me. "The Newlyweds" is one of those rare ones that I actually find funny.

Right now, there's an ILL Hobo Bag.
SPLAIN 01-28-2004, 10:12 AM I agree about that Newlywed show, looks interesting. Saw them on Oprah yesterday making fun of those comments she always makes. Chicken of the sea is tuna, not chicken, Buffalo wings are made of Buffalo and so on, she's a riot. Even her husband said he thought she was kidding for the cameras. But in her best Lucy Ricardo fashion, she wasn't.
ricardo/mertz 02-01-2004, 09:34 PM I personally do not see where Bonnie Hunt is anything like Lucy.
Don't get me wrong, I like Bonnie.
As far as Debra Messing, there has always been something about her that has reminded me of Lucy. She sort of looks like her and she is a very physical actress. The rest of Will and Grace is not like I Love Lucy. But, that is just my opinion.
SPLAIN 02-02-2004, 10:41 AM I think they just mean that it's funny, at the top of the ratings and has four main characters. The themes certainly are NOT the same!
crazyredhead 02-02-2004, 09:21 PM You got that right!
SPLAIN 02-03-2004, 10:37 AM Yesterday's rerun had Grace attemting a three way, yep, can't see the Ricardo woman doin that, LOL!
ricardo/mertz 02-03-2004, 10:14 PM You're right Splain, couldn't see the Ricardos' or the Mertzs' doing that! Heck, they weren't even aloud to say the word pregnant.
SPLAIN 02-04-2004, 10:26 AM I dunno, sometimes Percy Livermore did sound a little like Jack, LOL!

 They are quite similar.
P.S. I would like to correct the spelling of allowed. duh,I don't know what I was thinking.
SPLAIN 02-05-2004, 10:11 AM Don't go there, if I had to apologize for every spelling error i make, i'd have another thousand posts, easy!

I didn't even notice til you said something. Then I had to go and look. I posted on our discussion board at school and misspelled a word and there was NO edit feature! Now I have to look at that all semester! (my point being, don't worry about it, but I know how you feel!)
SPLAIN 02-05-2004, 03:40 PM Scarry, ain't it? LOL!
Lodee 02-05-2004, 05:27 PM And you say I can be mean?? coontest, coontest, coontest!!
ricardo/mertz 02-05-2004, 06:53 PM Lucy as the "big city woman" sort of reminds me of Karen:crazy:
SPLAIN 02-06-2004, 10:16 AM Oh that's true and she was TIPSY in that Vitameatvegamin sketch. And the maid does bring Verna Felton and her peanut butter sandwhiches to mind!

Verna Felton as Rosario!:D
That ep of ILL was on this evening on TVland. It always makes me crave peanut butter.
So....... I guess if we dig deep enough, there are some similarities.
Man, we are digging way deep!
O/T a (a little) I looked Verna up and I didn't realize she did so many voices. That's so cool. Now that I know that I can tell it is her. Learn something new everyday.
LucyCompanyPhan 02-08-2004, 01:21 AM I Love Lucy is nothing like Will and Grace. Maybe if Ricky was gay, Fred was gay and Ethel was drunk. Will and Grace is good at what it does, but its totally different.
MagsLovesLucy 02-08-2004, 01:13 PM This is a little off topic, but LucyCompanyPhan, I see that you're a John Stevens fan--I love him!! :)
Anyway, the actress who plays Karen (I forget her name--Megan something?) hosted SNL last night, and she was hysterical. Of course I was watching mainly because Clay Aiken was the musical guest :D , but I think that she's very good at what she does.
SPLAIN 02-09-2004, 11:45 AM YESSSSSSSSSSS, wasn't Megan great? That show is so seldom funny nowadays, yet i laughed a couple of times during her show. If you see Debra Messing at The Golden Globes, she actually DOES look like Lucy Ricardo a little!

:D great to see a john fan. hes so cute. ;)
And I really wanted to watch that episode but I forgot. oh well knowing snl it will be repeated 100s of times with reruns.
Kristina 02-09-2004, 08:07 PM No, I've seen it before and it just doesn't interest me. None of these new shows seem to keep my attention, boring. Nothing could ever replace I Love Lucy! :D

true that
SPLAIN 02-10-2004, 10:38 AM Well, it is the most popular comedy series of all time. Will and Grace, although i just LOVE it, is not fit to touch the hem of I Love Lucy's burnoose! But it's still one of the funniest shows on tv today.
