I found a scene you might be interested in. It's when Elaine tries to convert a guy named Robert who is gay into "switching teams" for the evening. The look on Elaine's face when she says "real bad" is priceless.
Elaine: I was hoping you know, that you might be interested in... changing teams?
Robert: Changing teams?
Elaine: Have you ever thought about it?
Robert: But I'm a starting shortstop.
Elaine: Robert, we need a shortstop. *Real bad*.

Wow...
I'm pretty up on buss word terms & such....
I didn't know that's what a beard was!!!!!!
Elaine is The Beard because she poses a a gay boy date.
(did you folks know that term???)
I usually think about the ep tittles, but hadn't on this one.
From the opening scene:
At Jerry's apartment.
Jerry: Look at you. Why don't you use a fork? You're no good with the sticks.
Elaine: I know. I need a lesson.
Jerry: You stink. You know you stink. What is this?
Elaine: Oh. My ballet tickets.
Jerry: Oh. Your ballet tickets.
Elaine: Hey, have you ever been to the ballet?
Jerry: No, but I've seen people on tiptoes.
Elaine: You know, I'm going as a beard.
Jerry: A beard?
Elaine: Yeah. This friend of a friend knows this banker guy, he's, I don't know, 30 years, unbelievably
gorgeous, of course he's gay.
Jerry: Yes.

That's what I'm saying....
based on this dialog, a beard is a gal who dates a gay guy for appearance purposes only.
I figured one of you hep cat NYers could set this left coaster straight....
Maestro loves classic colloquialisms & I hadn't heard that one :D
Obviously it's not new. Knowing Jer, it's probably an old school blast from the past.

I did not know it until I saw this episode a while back. I always knew what the epi title referred to because I recalled the beard/fake girlfriend discussion. I have not heard the term used since.
