Hey everybody. I'm very new. I just joined this board.
Anyway, I love comedy. I live for it. Sketch comedy, more specifically. Monty Python, the Kids in the Hall, and Mr. Show are my absolute favorites, although I love others like SCTV and UCB as well.
Anyway, I've recently started to dig back and learn a little more about the origins of comedy like this. I got a giant book on the history of Second City, which I recommend you all sit down and read, it's very fascinating and funny. And if you can, check out SCTV. Great sketch comedy.
And also, my biggest discovery as of late has been the National Lampoon. I'm not talking about run of the mill stuff like Van Wilder, I'm talking about NL's heyday back in the 70's. They were originally a humor magazine, kind of like MAD, only smarter. My dad gave me a whole bunch of old back issues from 1970-75, and let me tell you, they are HILARIOUS. Some of the funniest stuff I've ever read. It's a shame more people don't know about this stuff.
Anyway, I recently discovered then NL has an entire section on their website totally devoted to old classic articles, cartoons, etc., from the old magazine. You should all check it out, I was instantly hooked.
Their website is http://www.nationallampoon.com, and click on the "flashbacks" button to see all the oldies but goodies. And get your hands on some old issues if you can, it's worth the hunt. And I heard they're putting a book out soon, "National Lampoon's Big Book Of Love" or something, also full of old stuff from the mag. And rumor has it, they're working on an animated sketch show for Cartoon Network. I'ml ooking forward to it.
So, all, what are your thoughts on National Lampoon?
