The series made up of sketches taken from hour-long episodes of The Carol Burnett Show joins TV Land's lineup with a 48-hour marathon.

The original 1967-78 variety program starred the incomparable comedy ensemble of Carol Burnett, Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, Tim Conway and Lyle Waggoner, who were joined each week by music and celebrity guests. Included in this 96-episode weekend showcase are send-ups of classic movies; skits featuring recurring characters such as Mr. Tudball and his ditsy secretary, Mrs. Wiggins; and the daytime-soap parody As the Stomach Turns.

The comedy-variety series was a television staple in the late '60s and throughout the '70s, with popular entertainers like the Smothers Brothers, Sonny and Cher and Donny and Marie headlining their own shows. But though these entries ultimately faded from the limelight, The Carol Burnett Show maintained its popularity on CBS for 11 seasons and in that time racked up 25 Emmy Awards, making it the fourth-most honored program in Emmy history.

A key to Burnett's success was the great chemistry she shared with her supporting cast. Burnett and company seemed to have just as much fun appearing in the sketches as viewers did watching them. Among the most memorable and enjoyable moments from the show are the ones with resident cutup Conway making his costars, in particularly Korman, crack up as he ad-libbed lines. Another welcome bit of spontaneity came at the top of each show when Burnett fielded questions from the audience.

The show's deft blend of clever writing and a winking delivery produced some classic comedy moments, the most famous of which has to be the hilarious Gone with the Wind takeoff in which the red-haired comedienne's Starlet O'Hara proudly wears a "dress" that's actually a recycled drape — complete with curtain rod. That airs tonight at 10 pm/ET.

Other timeless bits can be found throughout the weekend. There are the outlandish "Sunset Boulevard" sketches featuring Burnett's slapstick portrayal of Nora Desmond, a decaying silent-screen star; and "The Family" skits revolving around a dysfunctional Southern clan that includes a constantly bickering daughter and her mama, played respectively by Burnett and Lawrence. The marathon also features many notable guest appearances by celebrities, including Rock Hudson, Bernadette Peters, Roddy McDowall, Jim Nabors, Vincent Price, Sammy Davis Jr., Betty White, Dick Martin, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme.

For folks too young to have seen The Carol Burnett Show during its original run, if you're a fan of outrageous costumes — designed exclusively by Bob Mackie — silly jokes, gratuitous pratfalls and lampoons of the entertainment industry, you're in for a real treat. And for those old enough to remember the series from back in its heyday, I have just one piece of disappointing news: The big production numbers featuring the Peter Matz Orchestra and the Ernest Flatt Dancers were edited out of the syndicated Carol Burnett and Friends. I told my mom I REALLY wanted to get out and go shopping after I changed tapes at 5. So we did that. I REALLY wanted to get "Troop Beverly Hills" (I LOVE THAT MOVIE, and Shelley Long is in it and she's AWESOME in it!), and I also picked up "Three Men and a Baby" and "Three Men and a Lady" (TOOOOOOOOOM SELLECK AND TEEEEEEED DANSON :drool: ). My mall was having a Crazy Days sale, so I browsed and got an AE shirt for only $8. OMG yes. :rock:

Then I got home and checked the mail and there was the DVD that I Love Carol Burnett! (Jon) sent me that I'd been waiting for, for about a week. THEN there was a key in my mailbox to open a bigger mailbox, so I took the key and opened the big mailbox...LO AND BEHOLD! AN ENVELOPE FROM SHELLEY LONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :faint:

I'll admit...I'm a BIG sucker for AE sweaters. They make awesome sweaters for girls in the winter time...That's pretty much the only AE thing I like...I won't buy their other shirts, they make them such a weak and thin material and save all that durable cotton for the mens' shirts. :rolleyes:

Apparently, there's a hole in the plastic in the sole (but it's not visible at all), right in the heel area.
