In WA state, for example, you can get a K-8 certificate, which theoretically allows you to teach in middle school. (Most of our middle schools are 6th-8th grades.) BUT - as I am finding out since I am going through the certification process right now - even if your state has K-8 certification, you will probably want to get an additional endorsement in the subject area you want to teach in - math, science, etc. (Math, science and technology teachers are especially in demand, by the way.) The best thing to do, would be to get a BA degree in a specific subject area, and then get your certification or an MIT (Masters In Teaching). Good Luck! I like the middle school grades, too. And it seems there are fewer people willing to teach those grades, so there should be more job openings there than in elementary schools. |
