The other night on Roseanne, Darlene was caught with a pack of cigarettes... and then Dan and Roseanne made her smoke a cigarette right in front of them and in front of the camera.... what i don't understand is... they have a kid smoking... under 18... on tape... how do the TV shows get away with this? i mean, how is it that they show kids smoking without getting people in trouble?

I'm pretty sure they weren't real cigarrettes...I think they probably have fake ones that are realistic (probably minus the nicotine) to use on television.

I dont know if it was a real or fake cig. but in the late 80's early 90's where I live there was no law that you had to be 18 to buy cig. like they have now, or at least it was not pushed cause I bought them with no questions about age asked. I think that maybe they wanted to teach kids about the affect of smoking and since the person that portrays Darlene does smoke in real life (unless she quit) maybe she smoked then so she had no problem smoking it on film.
She also could have used a prop, just like they do when a person does drugs on TV its not really drugs they are using.

It probably was fake. I remember a long time ago reading on Jenna von Oy's site about when her character had to smoke on Blossom. She said the cigarettes they used were fake.

In an article from the 80's or 90's she says they were herbal cigarettes. Sara Gilbert did smoke but she has now quit. When that episode was filmed I don't think she smoked as she was young (maybe 13 or 14).

Do you guys remember in that season 9 episode where the director yells "Cut!" and both Sara Gilbert and Jonathan Galecki pull out cigarettes? I always wondered if they both really smoked or if that was just supposed to be funny.

I think that it is good to show teenagers drinking, smoking and having sex on tv because it does happen, not like all of the clean cut teenagers on other tv shows.

I have an E! special behind the scenes of Roseanne from around Season 8.
It shows a short clip of Johnny (David) backstage smoking before the show. It also shows Glenn Quinn (Mark) in his own pub in his house smoking a cigarette. It also shows Roseanne on the set couch smoking while she talks to John Goodman.

She also smoked in "Bridge Over Troubled Sonny" in Season 1.

I thought the director said cut before Michael Fishman could have his mother-son scene. I don't remember Sara Gilbert & Johnny Galecki smoking

Darlene smokes in one of the "Jimmy" episodes too.

I read an interview with Sara in which she said she's quit, and Roseanne said on her website that she's also quit. As for the rest, I really don't know.
In the Jimmy one, that's where she blows rings, right? Roseanne says she doesn't smoke, so she takes the cigarette and blows rings and then says "Oh, look at that, rings."

That would be the one. I love that part a little while later Jimmy tells Roseanne that he demands respect from her and then tells her to leave and then she, Jackie and Darlene just start laughing at him. LOL. It's SO funny, he had no clue what he was in for. Did they edit something out there on N@N because it seems to just end so abruptly, right when they start laughing.
