OK, since everybody here pretty much has the first season DVD, I was wondering what people's opinions are on the first season, writing-wise and such. Also, what are people's favorite first season episodes?

My feeling is that the writing in the first season was not bad at all, but it certainly was not as good as it later was. I mean, there are some really good episodes in season 1, but not as good as later. LOL, does that make sense? I really hope Fox does bring out the later seasons, as I'm beginning to think they're a lot better.

Also, what are people's favorite first season episodes? Like Kristen, I think the writing for Season One of The Mary Tyler Moore Show was good for a first season. However, I have only seen Season One of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which means I have nothing to compare the first season with in terms of better acting by the cast, more hilarious episodes by the writers, etc.

My top three episodes from Season One of The Mary Tyler Moore Show are:- [list=1] Love is All Around
Support Your Local Mother
1040 or Fight

To be honest, I love the first season. True, the later seasons are somewhat better, but season one defined the show. It's not as bad as some think and there are some pretty hilarious episodes. A few of my favorites from season one are 'Toulouse-Latrec is One of My Favorite Artists,' 'The Snow Must Go On,' '1040 or Fight,' 'He's All Yours,' 'Just A Lunch,' 'We Closed In Minneapolis,' 'Hi!,' 'A Friend in Deed,' and of course 'The Forty-Five-Year-Old Man.' Okay, so thats a lot of episodes but like I said season one is great even though the other seasons are even better. Season one was just a setting you up for what good and hilarious episodes would come in the upcoming seasons.

By the way, Kristen I don't know if you know yet, but I got my dvd! I'm so excited!! :D I absolutely love it!

I'm so glad, Holly! :D "1040 or Fight" and "Toulouse-Lautrec" are favorites of mine as well. Maybe it's just that so many of season 1's episodes are kind of forgettable that makes me not like it as much as the later ones.

Yay! I know I'm so happy! *jumps up and down*

Yep, I know they are your favorite episodes. I haven't watched all four discs yet. I'm trying to save some episodes even though I've seen them all. I don't want to watch them all in one day. Today, I've watched 'Bess, You Is My Daughter Now,' 'Hi!,' and 'We Closed In Minneapolis.' I'm really enjoying the dvds though and the menus are so cool!

Thanks! :)

I, too, am really enjoying my DVDs... It would be a mistake for FOX not to release Seasons 2 - 7. As far as my opinions go, I think Mary Tyler Moore'sfirst season was one of the best first seasons of any sitcom. All sitcoms improve and mature from their first season to their second season, and Marywas no exception. But like I said, I think the first season had very good writing for a first season of a series. It wasn't the very best writing of the series, but still extremely witty and funny.

Also, I think all the characters in Mary Tyler Moorewere well developed and the actors playing them had a lot of chemistry between each other, right from the very first episode, "Love is All Around." I have noticed on other shows it takes the actors a little longer to get comfortable with the other actors. However, on Mary,it seemed that that 'comfortableness' was there from the pilot episode.

As much as I have praised the first season, I agree with all of you that the show improved in the second season.
