Dear All in the Family fans:

Since you all have a great understanding and memory of this hit show, I was wondering if any one of you could help me. I am doing research for a documentary that is exploring the sexual and cultural revolution of the late 60s and early 70s through the lens of the 1972 film "Deep Throat." In our exploration of this, we are searching for mentions of the film as well as general mentions of pornography and obscenity on the show.

Any references to the film itself or its stars (Linda Lovelace and Harry Reems) would be fantastic.

Not sure if any of you know anything about this movie, but it did made its way into the mainstream, being referenced on the Johnny Carson show multiple times. Also, we found a reference to it in an episode of "Sanford and Son." It is the most successful adult film of all time, grossing an estimated $600 million.

Any advice any of you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and all best wishes,

I don't think there were any references to "Deep Throat" in AITF, (probably because of the content and the fact that it was X-rated. Maybe the writers thought that would be pushing the envelope too far).
I do remember a scene when Archie and Edith came home from the movies. They had just seen "Carnal Knowledge" (with Ann-Margaret and Art Garfunkel (!)) and that movie (which has an R rating) also came out in 1972. I believe obscenity and pornography were discussed on the show (although the things Archie thought were obscene, Mike and Gloria did not).
For instance, there was a episode called "The Kiss." Gloria brings home a statue of a man and woman kissing. Archie sees it and says its obscene and doesn't want that filth in the house.
That is all I can think of right now. Good luck with your research paper, it sounds interesting.

There was definitely no direct reference to "Deep Throat" on AITF. I doubt the censors at that time would have allowed that phrase to be used, even though it was used during Watergate.
