When the opening credits ran, and they are all at the amusement park, you can see them all moving around where Brandon is pulling on JT and some other little kid was pulling on Carol the mother, the kid had brown hair that was short in front and a little longer on the sides and back, he was wearing blue jeans white shoes, grey jacket and yellow shirt, then near the end of the opening credits, the mother Carol gives the kid money then gives Brandon money. Who was this kid and why wasn't that kid in the show? The kid only appeared on the opening credits. Think the show made a mistake and though no one would notice. Could not be a relation to carol when she had only 1 sister and she was not married and had no kids. Unless it was an aunt or uncles kid.

Hmmm, the mystery kid...maybe it was a friend of Brendan's.

I think that kid was supposed to play Mark. This is corrected in the season two theme with the correct Mark.

This is the perfect explanation to this perplexing situation with the Step by Step open. When I saw the open, I was wondering the same thing that the original poster was thinking. Thanks for the explanation.

what i found also perplexing abt the opening is the rollercoaster they show right next to the ocean. That rollercoaster is Six Flags which is close to my city, and there is no ocean whatsoever near that amusement park, it's way inland. We are here at the beach, but not that amusement park. I don't know why they did that? Besides, it would be stupid to have a roller coaster on a sandy beach right next to the ocean....DUH!!!

Oh yeah...that ocean was digitally put in to the opening. I don't know why they needed to do that in the first place, but yeah...they used the really big parking lot next to the amusement park to put the effect of ocean waves in.

What are you talking about? How can you not like that. Sure it isn't realistic, accurate, nor does it make sense but it is aesthetically pleasing. I loved the way they did that with the ocean and beach next to the Colossus. It has a nice feeling to it and was a great touch to the open.

I thought that kid was Brendan (Josh Byrne). They superimposed the ocean over that parking lot which looks better than the parking lot, doesn't it?

I didn't post "I didn't like it" I stated I am perplexed as to why they did that? They could have shown the ocean or a different aerial view of the amusement park. I wouldn't be on any rollercoaster that was on a sandy beach...s**t, that thing would collapse immediately!!!

In the last season of SbS in the opening credits; has anyone noticed that behind S Summers on her on screen credit you can see an airplane ride and on that ride you can make out Josh B and the other kid who was going to play Mark. I wonder if that would have been their on screen credit rather than the one with the popcorn stand with the second Mark?

Christine Lakin (Al) revealed today to us that the dark-haired kid in the opening theme was actor Jarret Lennon. He played Mark in the original pilot.

I knew it was him, I could tell from the little bit we were able to see.

According to IMDb, test audiences were confused for whom Mark #1 was supposed to belong to paternally. I'm guessing that's why Mark #2 has blonde hair just like Suzanne Somers.

Jarrett Lennon gave alot of cool tidbits about how he was replaced and filming the pilot. See what he said here:

I'm a big fan of Christopher Castile and I don't think it would have been the same without him as Mark. But, why would they be confused about a dark haired Mark and then not be confused about Karen? People can be so strange.

IMO. Karen had to have dyed her hair anyways. There's a blonde under there. :happyface

I never thought about this until recently, but Step by Step really seems to have some of the most random casting (https://officialfan.proboards.com/thread/622265/watching-abc-show-step-hbo) for a family sitcom out there. Like are we genuinely supposed to believe that somebody who looks like Angela Watson (who has dark brown hair and blue eyes) could possibly be a blood relative of Suzanne Somers (who has blonde hair and blue eyes) or even Staci Keanan for that matter?

And I find it kind of funny that both of the actresses who played Carol's mother and sister (Peggy Rea and Patrika Darbo respectively) are with all due respect, heavy set looking when Suzanne Somers is svelte and thin.

Karen's bio father/Carol's first husband had dark brown hair, duh. A family, even immediate family with no step or adopted children, doesn't mean you automatically have the same hair/eye color as both parents and all your siblings.

Fun fact:

The reverse happened with the same 2 actors on "Hey Arnold."

Christopher Castile was originally set to play the character Eugene, before being replaced by Jarrett Lennon a few episodes in.
