It could have just been an end-of-season episode, I'm not really sure about that.
I don't really think Chris died at the end of it, as it was a running gag that he died in alot of the episodes.:D

I might be wrong, but I seem to recall the ending having a "THE END???" at the end as if to be holding out hope for a possible third season. My guess is that they knew it was the series finale.
